Album Notes

The path which led to the Burbank sessions after the live gig by the Nu Nova Compound at World Stage -- a performance which perked up the ears of Carlos Niño and was the impetus for realizing the opportunity to record this music -- starts decades ago. The unique moment in time that allowed these great musicians to individually be part of this creative ensemble led by Ghasem Batamuntu is a special enough blessing in and of itself, but the long personal and cultural threads that were woven together to realize this tapestry of sound only enhances the appreciation of this 'Gift'.

The main recording sessions were done with the Nu Nova ensemble at Tranzformer Studios in Burbank, with Bryan Carlstrom as recording engineer. Subsequent sessions were held in Holland, with Glen Gaddums engineering, and in the San Francisco Bay Area with Jamie Bridges at A Room With A View Studios in Petaluma.

The artists:

Ghasem Batamuntu, sax and leader
Nate Morgan, Jr., piano and keyboards
Sonship Theus, drums
Dadisi Komolafe, flute
Onaje Murray, vibes
Isaac Smith, baritone horn and trombone
Joel Ector, double bass, bamboo flutes
Charles Hamilton, trombone
Destiny Mohamed, harp

Will Alexander, spoken word (Solea XYZ)
Kamau Daaood, spoken word (Yellow Moon)
K. Curtis Lyle, spoken word (Nu Finitude)

Bay Area sessions:

Juma Santos (RIP), congas and percussion
Josh Jones, percussion
Scheherazade Stone, vocals (Waltz of Wonder)

Holland sessions:

Ellen van Harmelan, vocals (Wayne's Vein)
Wolter Wierbos - trombone (Solea XYZ)
Remco vander Sluis - traps, percussion
Angele de Jong - backup vocals
Farahday - alto flute (Wayne's Vein), backup vocals
Carlo Hope - djembe, percussion

This notable line-up of great artists serves up powerful ensemble work, lush vocals, brilliant solos, and collectively locked-in free jazz, much of which accompanies the spoken work passages.

All of our thoughts and prayers are with Nate Morgan and for his full health and recovery -- know that we love you Nate and are grateful for your presence among us.

If you don't know the S.Cal Jazz scene from the 60's till now this is a great modern incarnation and intro.Saxman Ghasem Batamuntu has a killer 3 session CD here with some of the veterans of the late great Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrika Orchestra Flautist Dadisi Komolafe and pianist Horace Tapscott are joined by a huge crew playing Bass, vibes(killer Onaje Murray),trombone,barito-tone,and poetry from the great Kamau Daaood and K.Curtis Lyle.An d that's just the Burbank sessions not the two ensembles from Holland (Ghasem's home base) and the D.F Sessions. It is beautiful album and if you dig the Black Jazz,Strata East, and Mighty Tribe spiritual jazz from the 70's you'll dig it.Gahasem I am sure won't mind a plug here for another collaborator with and spiritual descendant of Tapscott that being the great singer Dwight Tribble who has some great CD's is in same vein and is member of Build and Ark.These guys keep up the spirit of Tapscott (whose bio is one of best on West Coast Jazz and political activism ever written). After digging all you can find of both then go to Nimbus West records and get the Tapscott Pan Africa stuff itself.Simply stellar music with a loving positive groove which everybody needs about now. Peace Chazz

P.S. As a fan of all the Nimbus recordings I think that Nate Morgan is a genius and know he recently suffered a stroke and is on dialysis. But a report from November had him in good spirits and hopefully on the mend.Again a strong canetral member of "The Ark" a Tapscott refered to the Pan Afican Orch and smaller subsets.Sadder Dr.Juma Santos who played on this CD passed on from Malaria in Sept of 2007 at the age of 61.Again check his catalogue out at Nimbus West. His own LP's(CD's) and ones with long time collaborator Jesse Sharp are amazing. He was on everything from Bitches Brew to playing with a list of luminaries from Ahmad Jamal,Freddie Hubbard,Roy Ayers,Nina Simone. et al.He will be sorely missed by friends and fans alike.Again if you dig the early 70's spiritual jazz thing this is a great LP that shows the passion and flame are still alive.
