Gregory Douglass is sickeningly talented! He has rapidly become one of my favorites. I only wish I had discovered his music years ago. There is not much I can say about this CD except that it is pretty much perfect. I now own 4 of his CDs and they are all equally amazing. Gregory Douglass is that rare true artist that just doesn't come along often enough. Enjoy him while you can. I will!

I've had my cd for about 2 and a half weeks now and i haven't been able to stop listening to it. It's truly amazing. His words are inspiring and strong. I actually found out about him by mistake...one night my grams and I were flipping through the tv channels trying to find something to watch and we were passing through the music channels. We happened to stop on a channel and just as we were about to keep going through more channels when this song started to play and I told her to leave it there. The song was Hang Around from his latest album "Up and Away". I couldn't get the song out of my head for days...when I finally got around to looking him up on the net. I immediately fell in love with his music. I was hooked...and can't wait to purchase more of his music. I hope he's around in the industry forever and wish him nothing but the best of luck as his career continues to thrive.

GREGORY DOUGLASS: Up and Away

GREGORY DOUGLASS: "Up and Away"
"Up and Away" is the sixth album from Vermont-based singer-songwriter Gregory Douglass. The first thing that grabs us about this young artist are his vocal chords. Douglass' voice has a sophistication and worldliness that are clearly beyond his years. It soon becomes clear that Douglass' unique, versatile "vox" is the calling card for this prolific musician, whether he's emoting raw, quietly heartfelt honesty in "See You Cry" or cosmopolitan coolness in "Living". He knows how to hit those high notes. The album's opening track, "Light Don't Shine", features Douglass singing with a certain degree of restraint, giving the song (ostensibly about life's inspirations and motivations) a rather ethereal, dreamy, occasionally brooding aspect. It's an aura which this accomplished musician (In addition to singing, he plays keyboard and guitar on the album.) knows how to create. Next up is "Sentimental Fury". A song entitled "Sentimental Fury" had better have a sound that's as fiery as its title, and this one delivers: "I am the root of all your worries, I am the pain in all your glory; I am your sentimental fury, I am the monster of your story; I am the sick inside your remedy...". The song boasts a more aggressive beat and equally aggressive vocalizations by Douglass, and the listener also gets to hear some impressive high notes and equally impressive musical peaks. During this song, Douglass' keyboard work really seems to take on a life of its own. "Living", the third track, features an infectious hook, smooth grooves, and dynamic vocals-- and it's about by this time into "Up and Away" that we first realize that the album's title is appropriate. Gregory's music really does, at the risk of sounding cliched, "take you places", a claim that many other artists aspire to but may or may not deliver. "Hang Around" also gives the listener some impressive notes, while the next track, "Annabelle", plays it straight. Opening with a classically simplistic keyboard piece and featuring an interlude with violins, "Annabelle" keeps the background music to a minimum, preferring to showcase Douglass' vocals. Later on in the album, "See You Cry" also highlights Douglass' vocal range just as well. "Who Knows" has Douglass adopting a bolder, slightly more confrontational delivery-- with music to match-- which the listener will surely appreciate. (In other words, the song has attitude!) "There She Goes" has a darker beat, and Douglass sings it with a welcome dose of abandon. Douglass saves the title track, "Up and Away", for the finale-- and it's an appropriately elevating, inspiring send-off.
It's clear that Gregory Douglass' music has a lot of influences. "Up and Away" evokes the coolness of jazz with a good amount of heat, and the easy-on-the-ears quality of lounge music with just a touch of bite. However, there's no shortage of, shall we say, twenty-something angst... as well as enough musical intricacies to inspire the listener throughout the album. Intentionally or not, even with the creative lyrics about Douglass' world and the colorful characters in it, this young artist leaves an aura of mystery about himself, which is a rarity with many independent musicians who often "let it all hang out" in their music. We may have to wait until Gregory Douglass' next album to really get to know this singer-songwriter on a more personal basis. Music lovers will be waiting patiently!
