Album Notes

This is a story of a connection made through the magic of CDBaby!

Italian film-maker Francesco Paladino was browsing through CDBaby one evening and came across the music of Gayla Drake Paul, and he loved it so much he ordered several CDs. Gayla, being a good CDBaby member, e-mailed Francesco promptly, thanking him for his order. He e-mailed back, asking if she wanted to collaborate on a film, and Gayla immediately said “Yes!” A few weeks of discussion, planning and mutual inspiration later, and a project was born! This is the soundtrack CD for the movie, called “Bluesblood and Mud Flowers,” which is currently in production in Italy. As soon as there is a release date, we will post here.

(Update: The movie is finished and will have it's North American Premiere on August 16 at Collins Road Theaters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa!)

The basis of the music is the recording of the wind harp, which is literally a recording of a harp with wind blowing through the strings. Gayla improvised vocals and guitar over the harp recording, and was joined by long-time friend Rick McCarty (affectionately known as “Old Chocolate Voice” by his closest friends) on “Plains.”

“Ethik” is a Greek word loosely translated as “beauty within.”

This music is quite a departure for Gayla, and though it’s completely different from what most of her fans expect from her, it is quintessentially Gayla.
