notes
Singer/songwriter Mark Geary came to NYC in 1995 with a one-way ticket from Dublin, $100 in his pocket, and a green card. Recognized today as one of the East Village's favorite performers, Geary started out playing with Jeff Buckley at the legendary Café Sine' (started by Mark's brother Karl) and has since opened for the likes of Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, Coldplay, Midnight Oil, The Pogues, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Strummer, Lloyd Cole, The Frames, the Saw Doctors, Beth Orton, and Billy Bragg.
After being one of the last performers to play at the WTC as part of New York's popular Summer Stage concert series, Geary and actor Dennis Leary co-hosted a very successful star-studded 9-11 fundraiser at Arlene's Grocery. His songs have been featured in many independent films and a much anticipated debut album was supposed to have been released in 1999 by the now-defunct Paradigm Records. Two years later, film/TV producer Gill Holland became so enamored of Mark's music (not realizing until a live show that Mark Geary was NOT a famous Dublin resident, but in fact, Gill's local bartender) that he started put Mark in the studio and recorded a debut record which was released November 10, 2002. That week, Mark's song "Volunteer" hit the top ten on Today FM in Ireland, and in January 2003 Today FM named him the Witness Rising Artist of the Week. In February 2003, coinciding with the Irish release of the record, National Irish Television will air a one hour special on Mark, featuring seven songs performed solo.
Since then, Mark has toured the globe and participated in music festivals
all over the world, highlighted by three years in a row at SXSW, CMJ, as
well as Lisdoonvarna and Oxygen in Ireland. Mark’s 2005 release
Ghosts was voted Album of the Year (2005) by the Irish Voice and is nearing
Gold in Ireland. He has scored two films (2005’s (Loggerheads and
2006’s Steel City) that were selected for Dramatic competition at the
Sundance Film Festival. Mark’s music has been featured in countless T.V.
shows and films and can be found on many compilations, including Hear
Music’s highly successful Starbucks compilation.
-Citysearch says Mark is "part unself-righteous Elliot Smith, part multi-faceted Van Morrison" and that he "touches the heart the way David Gray wishes he could."
-Time Out Magazine calls him "an engaging singer/songwriter...(who) writes delicate songs about love and defiance...(and) recalls performers such as Richard Thompson and John Lennon."
-The Irish Voice hails his remarkable stage presence and calls him "a stand-out...popular among the downtown crowds."
-Commuter Week calls the record "something special."
-The Orlando Weekly says "the buzz is building...prepare to be turned on."
-The Nashville Rage calls him "the perennial hipster British opening act" while the Nashville Scene says the record is "loaded with little epiphanies," and the Nashville City Paper calls him "titillating...his moody and majestic melodies and lyrics land him somewhere between David Gray and Elliott Smith."
-The Lexington Herald-Leader calls him "a major name to watch."

good stuff!
author: LPthe opening track, "Gingerman", is worth the price of admission alone... overall, a lovely CD and the perfect accompaniment to a rainy day or to evening's arrival. listening to it made me wonder why Mark Geary isn't more well-known than he is. I'm going to spread the word in Seattle...
good deal...
author: pjvery good record, I bought it because his new record was out of stock, and I am not disappointed. I plan to buy his new one next, well worth a listen.
