Melodically rich, concise collection of songs
author: Tabacco
Marci Geller provides us with a collection of concise, melodically rich, mature AAA/pop songs. They are all personal pieces dealing with her feminist struggles in society, family life and surviving in the fickle, youth driven, superficial music business.
Marci is on the edge and you can hear that in her passionate delivery of her lyrics. On the haunting "Look What You've Done" she touches on the past where a vague, horrible event (molestation perhaps?) has occurred. She wrestles with her own existential inner doubt as heard on the title track "Here On The Edge". She also recalls childhood trauma in the mood swinging of "I'm So Angry" and the full frontal, sex drenched acoustic number, "Skin" is practically a good substitute for a blow up doll.
In general, I believe this is a CD more geared towards the female population. The male sector might feel a little alienated with Marci's subject matter but beyond that we are left with some very memorable songs and honest vocal performances that inspire repeated listenings.
Also of note: The crisp, uncluttered production by Dave Cook and Gear Head Freaks composer Gian DiMauro never detracts from Geller's already stand alone, finely crafted pieces. They support Marci's vocal and piano playing in all the right places. The whole project is nicely recorded and mastered.
This is a solid CD with no filler. Definitely worth purchasing.

Marci Geller Here On The Edge By Suzanne Glass Type of Music: Straight ahead but fresh pop/rock. Other reviewers have called it folk music, and it does have the sincere, thoughtful quality of folk, but there is more of a biting edge. Hometown: Stony Brook, NY Notable: Marci toured with Ritchie Blackmore's new band in Europe and the USA during1999. Pretty cool gig! She also made an appearance on the Regis & Kathy Lee show as part of a new talent promotion. Highs: The songwriting. Geller understands what makes a hit song, without sacrificing her originality. The structures are fluid with natural motion between verse and chorus. The lyrics are profound. Since strong songwriting is probably the single most important quality an aspiring artist can possess, Marci is in good stead. The vocals also shine on this disc. Geller has that coveted ability to sound familiar, but still different, the first time you listen. She plays a nice piano, too. Lows: I like Marci a little better when she rocks out than I do on the slower songs. She has a great breathy, mellow quality, but it gets cooler when she really cuts loose! Production notes: Lots of piano and nice use of rock guitar licks makes for a sophisticated mood under Geller's one of a kind voice. Nice background vocals, something many indie CDs are lacking. Promo notes: Nice kit chock full of impressive quotes from rags such as the Village Voice. Artist website : www.sonicunderground.com © 1999 Indie-Music.com
