This is what jazz is all about
author: Neil Webner
Ok. I love jazz. Especially those soft touches that require tonal control and emotive feelings. Gene Walker is my ideal of the perfect jazz saxist. He does it all: smooth, upbeat, bebop, new ageish, even some funk. And he does it all in this album. What's not to love! I especially like his rendition of standards. On this, I put Mr. Walker not on a par, but ahead of Stan Getz, John Coltrain and all those other cats. And to see him perform: he doesn't stick himself out front of the stage as others might -- he draws back, lets the leading performer or soloist take center stage.

GREAT SOUL JAZZ
author: John L.
A great album by big toned saxophonist Gene Walker. There are some fine up tempo tunes, pretty ballads, a soulful "smooth jazz" track (Last night in Manhattan). Walker plays the blues with much feeling on Parker's mood and Etta Jones sings wonderfully on If you are a but a dream. Fans of Gene Ammons will not be disappointed.
