Album Notes

Colors of Jazz is a mellow Latin jazz CD that features some great horn playing by Lee Thornburg (who plays on the Tonight Show), Murray Low (who plays a mean keyboard with superstars like Pete Escovedo), wonderful vocals by Darryl Walker and Diana Ditri, and overall musicianship from my good friend and pianist Hal Ratliff who helped me immeasurably with this whole project.

I wrote 8 songs on this CD and the other 4 are jazz standards that I love. I play either flute or alto sax (or both) throughout. This CD was recorded on my Roland VS-2400CD Digital Recording Studio. The graphics were done by my soon to be brother-in-law David Turrell.

"Heading to Paradise" is dedicated to my sweetheart, Leslie. "Father and Friend" is dedicated to my eldest, Gina. Our rendition of "The Nearness of You" goes to my singer Sally. And "The Big RV" is for big boy Andrew.

I’ve been a music lover all my life. When I was a boy, I sang in the San Francisco Boys Chorus and performed in three opera productions. At U.C. Berkeley, I was Vice President of the UC Jazz Ensembles and played in a number of jazz combos. Now I run a software company for a living and make music for fun. Colors of Jazz is my fifth CD. I plan to donate proceeds from the sale of this CD to research on helping children with learning disabilities.

We had a lot of fun making Colors of Jazz. I hope you enjoy listening to it.

REVIEWS

I really love listening to this CD.

Although I’m not normally what you’d call a jazz aficionado, I found I responded to the kind of jazz on this album, Colors of Jazz. Some songs are old favorites, such as The Look of Love, The Nearness of You, What a Wonderful World. Others, written by Gene Wang, are fresh and novel. I especially like the Shannon is Dancing, and the final song, Father and Friend is deeply touching as it seems to refer to a beloved child leaving home to make his/her way in the world, leaving behind parents who are not quite ready to let go.

Colors of Jazz is an uplifting, wonderful CD. I enjoyed the singing, of course, but I especially liked the flute passages. The original songs by Gene Wang such as “The Big RV”, “Shannon Is Dancing”, and “Father and Friend”, will have special meaning for RV travelers, parents with dancing children, and fathers with daughters going away to college. I play this CD over and over.
