Album Notes

Hailing from New Jersey, Vicki Genfan is simply one of the most exciting guitarists around. Featured on Vanguard Records’ recent La Guitara CD (a collection of virtuoso
female guitarists), Genfan’s dynamic style borrows as much from Michael Hedges and Pat Metheny as it does from James Taylor and Earth Wind and Fire. Playing both original
instrumentals and vocal-based material, Genfan uses two-handed tapping, harmonic slaps, and alternate tunings in a style that is uniquely her own.
“Vicki...has brewed her own style out of wiping chords, airy tapping tachniques and a precise melody play that has no name...and creates a new kind of singer-songwriter culture.”
- Frankfurter Allgemeine

Her newest collection, ‘Up Close & Personal’ is a double CD, self-released on her newly formed Harmonic Touch Records, June 14, 2006. It stands to be her best work yet. Engineer Tay Hoyle and Producer Ian Melrose have succeeded in bringing out the stunning beauty and vibrance of Genfan’s guitar work as well as capturing some of her most evocative vocal performances to date. Featuring solo tracks, duos and some full band pieces, Genfan’s stellar arrangements and unique composition sensibility flow effortlessly throughout these 2 discs.

CD #1 (Up Close) is completely Instrumental while CD #2 (Personal) features Vicki’s ‘singer-songwriter’ tracks.
Each disc closes with a quick time video clip (can be viewed on any computer with Quick Time) full of highlights
From the last 3 years worth of recording.

Appearing on these 2 discs are also some of the industry’s most sought after musicians; Producer Ian
Melrose, Steve Jordan, Manolo Badrena, Gil Goldstein, Rob Paparozzi, Daniel A. Wiess, John Mettam, Jon Albrink, Bryant Wilder, Jess Willoughby, Barb Merjan, Janelle Burdell, Sonya Heller, Everett Bradley, Jenn Hopper,
Penny Mealing, Erika Luckett and Kerstin Blodig, each bringing their own gifts to the project.

In the past year, Vicki has had the honor of sharing the stage with such guitar greats as Tommy Emmanuel, Laurence Juber, Steve White, Pete Huttlinger, Patty Larkin, Mimi
Fox, Kaki King and Jennifer Batten. Genfan will continue touring and teaching in the US and Europe in support of the new release as well as of her first two solo CDs, ‘Outside the Box’ (Self Released 2000) and ‘Vicki Genfan – Live’ (Acoustic Music Records, Germany 2003).

“Whether Genfan is edging into rock or swirling into folk and jazz, this is fiery, living music.”

I love this music
author: Sue Bricker
"Up Close & Personal" is such a total package; from the amazing skill and artistry of Vicki Genfan to the wonderful musicianship of the support musicians, to the beautiful production and final package. I definitely said "WOW!" the first time I listened to the CDs. By the way, I listen to it all the time and each time is like the first time ... I still say "WOW!".

This is my first cd from Vicki and I love it. I heard about Vicki through a friend. If these cd's were on tape, I would already need a new one. I play her music in the car to relax a bit while driving in traffic. Will definitely be purchasing all her albums.

Wonderfully eclectic music

I read about Vicki Genfan in a Sept. 16, 2008 article in the Wall Street Journal. The story was about Guitar Magazine\'s fourth annual Superstar Competition held at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Vicki Genfan not only won the contest, but she blew away the judges with her music. I ordered the CD the next day. \"Up Close and Personal\" is actually a two-CD set. #1 is almost exclusively instrumental with minimum vocals. It leads off with \"Atomic Reshuffle\", the tune she played at the SF contest. Wow! It\'s stunning music. Her guitar shimmers with a brightness of sound that I hadn\'t heard for a while. (Kind of reminds me of Michael Hedges.) When she combines her self-described \"flap tap\" style that combines percussion and harmonic elements, the CD is dazzling. I worked my way through every cut on CD #1 and moved on to CD #2, which is more of a traditional band performance with vocals and background singers in harmony. Normally, I prefer instrumental music but to be honest, her songs are growing on me. Her covers of traditional songs (\"Norwegian Wood\") are breathtakingly different and her lyrics definitely have some unexpectedly ironic twists and turns. Her website describes her music as \"folk meets funk\" and I guess that\'s as good a description as any. This is highly recommended for people interested in expanding their musical horizon. Congratulations to Vicki for winning the guitar contest and for coming out with such a terrific CD set!

What a Find!

I was flipping through the channels on TV one night, and from out of nowhere, I see and hear this amazing performer playing on a "local" cable music show in Floral Park, NY. I had to get Vicki's "Up Close & Personal". She was just amazing in person, and the CD's are fantastic. I'm looking forward to any future releases, or national TV appearances.
