Album Notes

Following are excerpts from the disc's program notes.

This disc is a Phase I compilation of an ongoing musical effort known as the Genkin Philharmonic. It is a tribute to the music within, and to the young players who when they joined the band, were pretty much lost on the idea. In time, everyone came around, (after much practicing), and contributed some very special performances. This disc is proof that young players are really capable of anything, no matter their technical background or level of musical sophistication.

The first version of Genkin was started in 1999 as a chamber music class at The University at Buffalo. Genkin Philharmonic had its first big show at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Evansville, IN. We started playing for about 700 people. 300 got up and walked out during the first piece. I knew we were on to something.

Members of this group were able to work with Tom Pierson, Kirk Nurock, Bobby Previte, Elliott Sharp, and Dafnis Prieto, all of whom I brought to UB for collaborative mini-residencies. Their impact is still felt at school, and by all those who worked with them.

The Genkin Philharmonic is a credit-bearing ensemble class at the University at Buffalo Music Department. The mission of the class is to provide a uniquely challenging opportunity for students to study and perform contemporary music that draws on musical genres spanning rock, jazz, improvised and chamber music.

Jon Nelson can be heard on all CDs by Meridian Arts Ensemble, and on his solo projects Metalofonico, and Gran Calavera Electrica. All discs may be purchased at www.cdbaby.com.

REVIEWS

Not to be confused with Gerkins

I'm buying several of these for all my St. Vitus Day's gifts. Jon Nelson knows Zappa. And not in the Biblical sense: he's never on his knees. This is all elegant music. Fun too. I mean, just listen to the BWAPPING in Marqueson's Chicken. You can beat a measure with Marqueson's Chicken. This is authentic music. With eyebrows.
