Great Fun Pop Experience
author: Dean Madonia
This CD is a lot of fun. Great songs, great production. I hate to compare anyone to anyone else, but if I were forced to, I would say that there is a definite Ben Folds influence (think "Rockin the Suburbs") on the production.
The songwriting style is quirky and fun like Folds with maybe some Joe Jackson and Todd Rundgren thrown in. Smith and the Wheels are mostly piano based with nice Beatles like harmonies, tight, smooth grooves.
This is fun "Cars-like" music with no trace of anger - the viewpoints are presented with a smile and occasional traces of melancholy. This is the kind of happy and mellow CD that could be your best friend on a hung-over Sunday morning while you tape up the window, pick up the trash and wash the dishes. Go getcha-self some.

These tunes represent a move back to well-crafted melodies.

What makes a cd interesting to me is when each song takes on a life of its own yet contributes to the overall musical thought of the project. Geoff Smith and the Tonewheels is a great example of this. Many may not get the joke of Not On The Radio but, nevertheless, it has an infectiousness that will capture non-Podcasters as well. As you listen, there will be obvious moments where the ghosts of Beatle-crafted fun takes place; which is where I still find my enjoyment musically.
