This is an excellent selection of originals and standards by some fine players from Portland. Mitchell plays piano (think Bill Evans into Herbie) and B-3 organ (think Larry Young, Jr.) accompanied by guitar (not bad) and a good rhythm section.

To describe this album in a word- Crisp. Every phrasing, whether it's coming from the bright piano, the thumping upright bass, the buoyant guitar or the shuffling drums, sharply mingles with the collective, ensemble sound in such a clear, refined way that it almost suggests a grid, if not for the equally-impressive fluid, freely-expressive curl. From finger-snapping, swinging, uptempo jives to broad and elegant, expansive songs, George Mitchell's "Play Zone" is remarkably chiselled from rich traditions and contemporary vision.
