We get a lot of music at Whole Wheat Radio and enjoy most of it. But once in awhile we get something that stands out. Something you can't forget. Something you want to put on your CD player and listen to over and over again, just to catch the lyrics ... but then you slip into the beauty of the music and miss some lyrics. Doesn't matter. You know you're listening to something real. Something good. Very good. The reason you fell in love with acoustic folk music to begin with. I highly recommend it.

George Wirth is a singer/songwriter with a gift for telling human stories shaped by imagery and narrative. His unaffected, lived in vocal style and guitar arrangements suit his songs perfectly, with images and melodies that resonate long after the music fades. Never one to grab a cheap cliche’, George’s lyrics capture moments from the lives of friends and strangers alike and make them real in their honesty. We know these people, even though we’ve never met, and while the songs are personal to George they become personal to the listener as well. Live, his songs are often interspersed with humorous stories, observations and rambles that take on a life of their own, resulting in further narrowing the gap between performer and audience.

George has been introduced to audiences and shared performances with friends Rod Picott, Abbie Gardner and Red Molly. He’s appeared on bills with Anais Mitchell and Richard Julian at The Saint in Asbury Park, NJ, where he’s been performing regularly. Most recently he had the honor of having been invited to perform at The Clearwater Festival, also in Asbury Park, and has received nominations in two Asbury Music Awards catagories, Best Acoustic Act and Best Local Release for his "Lights of Brigantine" CD.

    the most demanding means of entertaining people, musically, in my view, is simply sitting down with a solo guitar and singing, alone. george wirth does it beautifully, and with dignity. and, his best song ever isn't even on this cd! maybe on the next one...

    This is the aural manifestation of one man's life harvest. Simple, warm, gentle, sad, yet beautiful and profound all at once. Great stuff! Like a great wine (or whiskey) this music will only improve with age, just like George Wirth. I'm proud to own this CD.

  • Captivating story songs from NJ singer/songwriter

    As a singer/songwriter myself, I find The Lights of Brigantine both humbling and inspiring. The songs here are gritty and real, the performances inspired and honest. While I'm landlocked some 5 hours away from Monmouth County, I feel the details and descriptions and characters here and I'm back "down the shore." There is not a track here that I skip over, with personal favorites this week being the title track and Cross the Wide Missouri. And Old Dancing Fool is sweet without being saccharine - a fine line to walk, and one George does successfully. I first heard about George from a mutual friend, Abbie Gardner, and she commented 'I think you'd like him a lot." 'deed I do! Highly recommended for fans of folky acoustic singer/songwriters.

    I hardly ever buy a CD and never write reviews, but this one struck a chord. Tripped over Brigantine on wholewheatradio and had to have it for my anytime-convenience. All the songs are just George's soulful voice and his guitar which make for a great combination. Thanks.

  • Brings you into his living room

    I came to this CD for "Steel & Stone", which is about a friend of mine. After hearing the whole disc, I felt I'd found another friend. We just haven't met yet. The playing is as articulate as the lyrics. Combined with the lived in voice, the listener is put right in the next chair at some living room guitar pull. I found myself leaning in toward my speaker so I could get a better view of his fingers.

  • Simoly a Wonderful Album.....

    The only reason I gave this album five stars is that there weren't more available. I just finished a cross country jaunt, during which I played this CD for many, many people. The response was universal: who is this and how can I get the album? If you like well-wrought songs that truly have something to say, don't hesitate... get this album now. Full disclosure: "Steel and Stone" is about my father... It's only one reason I think this album is so very, very good.

  • Words worth a thousand pictures

    I confess I know George (slightly) but I am also a notorious low grader, so you can trust me when I tell you that you will have your socks knocked off. Hard Love, Steel and Stone, Eisenhower Summer, 1952 and all the other great stories will move in with you and you will welcome them to stay. Makes me want to take a pilgrimage to New Jersey to look at the Lights of Brigantine.

    This CD is wonderful. George Wirth is a great storyteller, and the fact that these tales are set to music with a guitar makes the CD even better. I've heard George live, and ordered the CD as soon as I knew it was available. Several people on my gift list are receiving this for Christmas.

  • Great words, great sound

    In the songs I like, the words are as important as the music, and I like this album. These songs all take you somewhere, with a few words evoking a rich context for the songs. References to the work of artists like Levi Stubbs and Bob Dylan efficiently paint the background for Wirth's personal stories. The clean fingerpicked sound of a beautiful acoustic guitar and Wirth's rough and knowing voice deliver a thougtful experience. This one is for listening.
