Album Notes

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Too often, the traditional "women's music" we hear is about victims; murder ballads, songs of unrequited love and downtrodden wives. Yet women past and present have developed a vibrant oral tradition documenting their concerns, joys, struggles and achievements.

I began searching for the "woman positive" traditional and early composed songs in 1982, and in 1984 recorded an LP called WOMANSONG. This was followed in 1991 by PRINCE CHARMING DOESN'T LIVE HERE. This CD features a wide selection of favorites from both, plus 2 new songs. (You can still find cassette versions of the originals at my web site, CreativeFolk.com)

Over 70 minutes of music, plus lyrics and historical notes, all in one package!

ABOUT THIS MUSICIAN

Gerri Gribi is a unique musician, historian and storyteller. Raised in the hills of Kentucky, she's toured North America for over 20 years, performing at colleges, coffeehouses, theaters, festivals...even military bases and prisons.

Accompanying her clear soprano voice with autoharp, mountain dulcimer and guitar, she uses traditional and original songs to express a world view that's lively, fun, and (gasp!) thought provoking.

A frequent guest on TV and radio, her original music has been heard in a variety of media outlets and projects, including ABC PrimeTime Live. She's released six recordings of traditional and contemporary folk music, and her latest CD, The Womansong Collection, has been enthusiastically reviewed both at home and abroad.

Her infamous "Hunting Song" (aka "Animals Love Vegetarians") airs on alternative stations around the world each fall.

She has degrees in History, Education and African American Studies. Her many awards include the 2004 Johnson Subvention Award from the Society for American Music, and the "Write Women Back Into History" Award from the National Women's History Project.

It's a great album all the way 'round...I must admit I like your tune [Hills of Kentucky] better than mine [Cowboy's Sweetheart] for I've been humming it ever since!

Excellent

The collection recounts and celebrates "Women" for their achievements and ingenuity rather than their forlorn fate with men. A very lovely album with a positive and not polemic approach to the feminist aspects of history. Excellent.
