Album Notes

Gertrude are an inventive four piece who are rooted in an eclectic post punk landscape, one that is enhanced by the rich sounds from the electric cello, clarinet and melodica. An invigorating experience.

It was in 1997 that gertrude burst forth like a shot from a cannon right in front of the admiring eyes of London's underground artsy/squat scene. Influences at the time were Fugazi, riot girl the cardiacs, post punk and prog.

Everyone in the band is in control, Gertrude formed as a collective from the outset. The bands commitment to non hierachical ways of organising and managing themselves is also realised musically by the rhythmical interplay between different band members, and, by the interaction of the three main vocalists, who weave in an out of multi layered songs.

Their debut album ‘Up the wrong Tree‘ was recorded in 10 days. Organ online e-zine reviews the album and states:
“this is brilliant, don’t miss out, we’ve got a million albums in here in Organland, very few become treasured possessions like this will.”

"Its mindblowing" Gigwise 2003

Frequently, the power and confidence of the band has now been described as 'awe inspiring' as Gertrude has evolved into a jagged, power-cello mutant orchestra, offset at times by lyrical melodica madness.

Gertrude have supported The Libertines, Submission Hold,PAIN, Chumbawambama, Ari Up and The true warriors, NoMeansNo as well as the legendary SHELLAC and FUGAZI.

Gertrude second album, 'Fetch The Parrot Blanket' is due to be released in Feb 2006 and is self engineered and produced by the band. It will be available from CD baby.
