This song was written as a tribute to a legendary figure in West Coast Blues, the late Johnny Heartsman. He was part of the second generation of artists who combined blues with jazz, soul and funk elements, and sometimes latin rhythms. West Coast Blues always grooves but with a typical California laid back feel.
The lyrics say it all about Heartsman himself and the music he contributed to.
"West Coast" features GG Amos on stirring lead guitar and vocals and her performance exemplifies the sound described above. She is also the lyricist, co-arranger and producer.
Taki Komori who composed the music is also greatly featured here on Hammond B3 organ and lays a simmering bed of sound which explodes into a passionate solo. Amos and Komori are part of the 3rd generation of this blues style and hope to leave a memorable reference point for it among fans and music scholars alike.
Also on this track...Ron Hull contributed rhythmic and lovely guitar voicings. Deep lyrical bass was played by Artis Joyce and the soulful hypnotic drums were laid down by Ahaguna G. Sun; all veteran musicians with long histories on the west coast.
This recording was a labor of love and the dreamy quality of it will transport listeners to a beautiful place..then and now.
