Re-Defining ‘GHETTO’

With a nod to classic, MC-driven super groups like NWA, Wu Tang Clan, and The Geto Boys, and an obvious love for the true backbone of rap music – the smoothed out, laid back, trunk-rattlin’, head bangin’, ass-shakin’ beats -- six-member, multi-regional, next wave hip-hop phenomenon GHETTO LIFE delivers on all fronts. Their sound is a mixture of the varied perspectives of the members, who hail from the West Coast and Texas, which is quickly emerging as the capital of Hip Hop’s New South, and heads are starting to take notice.

KAYO, SHORTY RUFF, COOP MC, MANCINI, DAP and UZI stay focused on the grind and their talent and respect for rap as an art form has gained the attention of peers like legendary Houston MC Bun B of UGK, who makes an appearance along with Juvenile on GHETTO LIFE’s twerked out bass-heavy ‘hood anthem to grills, “GOLD MOUF – THE REMIX”. Just as easily as they keep it trill from the Third Ward all the way down to the Ninth Ward, the GHETTO LIFE crew effortlessly blends the Swagger of the South with the Laid Back, Playalistic Chill that California has perfected.

“GHETTO LIFE is all about Gaining Higher Education To Teach Others Life”
– The Group in their own words

Everybody in hip-hop talks about “staying true”, and “keeping it real”, but with most of the music being created in conference rooms instead of in the streets, its “realness” tends to wear off as soon as the next flavor of the month is introduced. So much of hip-hop is packaged for mass consumption based on the tastes of corporations that rap purists, the music’s realest fans, have started to reject as clichés much of the mass-produced, major-label product in favor of material from underground independent labels. This is where GHETTO LIFE is forging a new direction in rap. True to the moniker, they’ve kept their grind focused on the ‘hood, where hip-hop really lives, building a following the old fashioned way, by giving the people what they want to hear – good music that they relate to.

“We’re not trying to get caught up in what’s going on with everyone else.” – The Group on what sets them apart

At first glance, the members of GHETTO LIFE are an unlikely mixture of personalities, but this is no ordinary rap collective. GHETTO LIFE is a fusion of longtime friends, distant relatives and newfound allegiances coming together out of a mutual love for the music. “GHETTO LIFE is not just the name of the group. It’s a movement. It’s bigger than any one of us. We want to take away the negativity that everybody associates with the ghetto, and put it in perspective. It’s not all bad. It’s where we all come from.” That’s why the music speaks for itself.
