Album Notes

This trio album has been recorded by Aldo Sinesio from the legendary Horo records.
Horo has been one of more prestigious indie jazz label from early 70's and it's known among collectionists for being the producer of such great recordings by masters like Archie Shepp, Lee Konitz, Sun Ra, Johnny Griffin, Frank Rosolino, Charlie Mariano and many others.
This item is the first of a new series after around 20 years. With this new series the legendary producer Aldo Sinesio will present some of the best jazz around in Italy and not only.
The new philosophy of Horo will be based on digital releases plus very refined high quality vinyl productions.
The trio is led by the experienced alto sax player Gianni Gebbia and it features two of the best players from the italian contemporary jazz scene: bassist Stefano Senni and the drummer Francesco Cusa. The music has been recorded live in Porto Empedocle and the music concept is dedicate to the greek philosopher Empedocles who himself was from Porto Empedocle. Like in Empedocles theories based on the alternance of different main forces in reality, this music switches easily from dark and slow atmospheres to some swinging and fast platforms.
Senni is a bassist from solid roots with a woody and deep sound while Cusa is a creative polyritmic drummer, they both fits perfectly with Gebbia's alto that gives us a sort of paradoxical mix between cool jazz sounds and Coltrane-like licks.
Empedocles has been recorded live by F.Marullo in Porto Empedocle Cinema Mezzano using a traditional approach to live recording with a typical 70's jazz sound.

Gebbia is a lead italian alto player and it has been playing all over the world especially in Usa and Japan where he's often based. He's considered one of the most skilled expts of the tecnique of circular breathing.
His biography is present in many specialized encyclopedias like The Penguin Jazz, Richard Cook's Jazz Encyclopedia, Grove Dictionary of Jazz. He's considered one of the most outstanding voices in contemporary italian jazz and also in improvised free music. He has played with hundreds of great musicians as Peter Kowald, Gunther Sommer, Pino Minafra, Louis Sclavis, Michel Doneda, Han Bennink, Fred Frith . In 1990 he won the poll as best talent from the Italian jazz magazine Musica Jazz.

Senni is considered as one of the best jazz bass players in Italy from the last generations. He regularly plays with hundreds of great players like Enrico Rava and Stefano Bollani. He's also active on a more avantgarde jazz scene and he's one of he founders of the renowned musician's collective and label Gallo Rojo from Italy.

Cusa is one of the lead drummers in italian avant jazz and has a very unique style in jazz as well in impro. He's one of the leaders of the italian label and collective named Improvvisatore Involontario. He has collaborated with many great artists as Paolo Fresu, Ernst Ludwig Petrovsky, Tim Berne, Elliott Sharp and Steve Lacy.
