Gianni Gebbia: alto, soprano and Eb sopranino saxophones, clarinet
Peter Kowald: contrabass
Gunther Baby Sommer: drums
Cover etching by Gianni Gebbia
Recorded in Palermo Italy at Miao Studios from 16 to 18 March 1992.
This historical recording has been considered by all critics and writers as a masterpiece in the European free jazz scene from the 90's. The sicilian born saxophonist Giann Gebbia is accompanied by Peter Kowald on contrabass and the drums wizard Gunther Baby Sommer, both from Germany.
The recording shows an amazing and surprising mixture between solid free jazz issues and mediterranean influences given by Gebbia. At the time of this recording Gebbia was quite young but he demonstrates already a very interisting saxophone sound influenced by alto masters as Julius Hemphill, Ornette Coleman and many others. He also plays soprano, sopranino saxophones and clarinet. There's a very fascinating subtile mediterranean athmosphere all trough the recording and he led Kowald and Sommer towards more melodic textures than usual as shown on the very end of this cd on the tracks entitled Palermo Capetown/ Capetown Palermo a sort of Kwela jazz kind of tunes strongly influenced by the sound of artists like Abdullah Ibrahim aka Dollar Brand.
