Album Notes

Travis and James met in high school. Kyle was already a local legend at that point. James was apprehensive about starting a band with Travis because Travis had crazy long hair and drove a shitty van. Travis partied too much and pretended he was gay. They began to play music together about 1998. At first James wanted to quit because irregular meter made his foot tap funny. They played college parties and ethnic bars. They recorded an album onto VCR tapes, which was the style in those days. James moved and they threw the VCR tapes away. Kyle got married, Travis got engaged. Then one day James came back because found a job on an ostrich ranch. An informal meeting was held and THE GIANT SQUID SHOW formed again. A new recording has been released like white doves from a rusty cage.

Amazing Album

I was completly shocked when I put this album in my CD player, it was amazing! Some of the most intense music I have heard in a while. The only band I could compare The Giant Squid show to is Primus, and even that is a long shot! Amazing drums, nice funky bass lines, smooth guitar, and some kick ass vocals! One hell of an album!

This debut album is a masterpiece. The Squid Show has an approach to music that has never before been seen. Only the 3 Giant members of the Show know the origins of their Aquatic inspirations. This album is the musical version of that crazy smoothie a friend makes you after a long night of drinking... With so many nasty ingredients You'll never understand why its so good. It just is.

Progressive rock is alive, and has swum to shore on the Central Coast – The Giant Squid Show’s recently released, self-titled CD should quell any qualms. The Giant Squid Show – comprised of local boys Travis Whitney, James Longoria, and Kyle Batty – have put to disc a dozen technical, sarcastic originals, a good number of which were written six years ago in an old funky garage in Buellton. Right out of the gate the lads set the bar high with “Queen Romiqua of the Jive Trash Can,” which flows seamlessly into track 2, “Eyes of the Tumbleweed.” “Queen Romiqua … ” is a hilarious, thought-evoking (Who is this poor chick?) mix of distorted rock guitar with great detuned bends and solo; super clean, in-your-face bass guitar; and smart-ass lyrics (If you don’t laugh, you’ve got issues); all constructed upon a solid foundation of precise drumbeats. The first 15-seconds of “Queen Romiqua … ” sounds a bit Spinal Tap-ish – genius! The ironical ride continues with “Bathroom Monster,” which features Whitney’s fancy slap-bass work and searing vocals; and a great carnival-ride interlude without the carnies. “String Bean Carlos” is my favorite, with its amusing story line (featuring Longoria on the vocals too); flawless slide guitar playing and driving bass lines, all while Batty colors within the lines with cymbal trickery, and a lightening-fast drum fill that begs to be rewound and played again. The doctor is in with “Dr. Del,” a slowed number with funk-ish overtones that builds to heavy, dropped-D rhythm playing. And, “Damian’s Orange Camouflage Army” is a melodic militant mix that will get your head bobbing. Those of you who still get stoked on prog rock are sure to dig The Giant Squid Show. So shake the sand out of your shorts and get a hold of a copy of The Giant Squid Show today.
