notes

LITTLE GREEN THING is a rich musical gumbo of fun songs and dance tunes from a variety of ethnic and regional folk traditions -- old-time country music; African-American play-party songs; fiddle tunes from upstate New York, Ireland, Scandinavia, Arizona; klezmer; even Hawaiian music. The CD also features many of Gillygaloo's own roots-inspired original songs and instrumental compositions. Gillygaloo serves it all up, hot and tasty, on acoustic instruments--fiddle, guitar, squeezebox, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, dulcimer, cuatro, dumbec, and more!

Gillygaloo has been entertaining kids and their grownups since 2001. Members of the band are:

SUZI SHELTON (vocals, dumbec drum, guitar). Gillygaloo's charismatic lead singer has been teaching, performing and recording old and new favorites for young children for the past eight years. Suzi also has a background in modern and other forms of dance. She is the resident music teacher at Beginnings Preschool in NYC and teaches preschool music and movement classes at other venues as well. Suzi began her recording career in 1997 with the Imagination Workshop Band and is currently working on her own solo album. When she's not teaching, performing or recording, Suzi keeps on her toes trying to keep up with her five year old son, who loves to help his mom write songs.

SHLOMO PESTCOE (vocals, button accordion, English concertina, mandolin, lead guitar, 5-string banjo, fiddle, tenor banjo, ukulele, Appalachian dulcimer, Puerto Rican cuatro and more). Shlomo has been delighting kids in and around the Big Apple with his "edu-taining" performances and hands-on musical activities since 1990. He was the first musician-in-residence at the Children's Museum of Manhattan and the Children's Museum of the Arts in NYC, a visiting artist/educator for outreach programs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a principal consultant in the creation of the Brooklyn Children's Museum's permanent music exhibit. Shlomo teaches kids and grownups guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and ukulele both privately and as a staff teacher at the Musician's General Store in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Formerly lead instrumentalist for the Imagination Workshop Band, he also wrote many of their songs, including the ever-popular title cut of their first album, SUBWAY TRAIN. Shlomo's songs are showcased on LITTLE GREEN THING.

BOB JONES (vocals, guitar, double bass, 5-string banjo). Bob has been a fixture of New York City's bluegrass and folk music scenes since the early '70s, and was also for a time guitar accompanist with Andy Statman, an internationally-acclaimed master of the klezmer clarinet and mandolin. Among the many bands that currently include the versatile Mr. Jones are the Singing Conquerors, a local bluegrass string band that performs down-home gospel from both the black and white traditions. On the day shift, Bob 'Dr. Frets' Jones heals and restores fretted string instruments, and is highly regarded by musicians and instrument technicians alike. Bob's real pride and joy is his teenage daughter who is blossoming as a poet, writer and singer.

MICHAEL GORIN (vocals, fiddle). Michael is a well-known New York City fiddler who has performed at community dances, festivals and social functions for over 20 years. Michael's a founding member of both Grand Picnic, NYC's foremost contra dance band, and the quirky Duffy's Insurance, a relative newcomer to the contra dance circuit. He is also the long-time musician for Half Moon Sword, the Big Apple's premier purveyor of Northern English rapper and long sword dance and host of the annual New York Sword Dance festival. In real life he is the devoted father of two remarkable children, whose talents on the piano and trombone already delight and worry him.

It is obvious that the musicians put alot of thought and effort into the subject matter and recording of this CD, and boy, did it pay off! Musicianship and vocals are fantastic, songs are witty and funny. My little one (6 months old) loves it, and so do all the friends we've bought it for!

  • Awesome and fun!

Exceptional music! Adorable lyrics! It's great traveling music. Our son snaps his fingers and claps his hands until we reach our destination. We would recommend it to anyone with or without children. Since we listen to it ourselves. It's just FUN. Can't wait for the next CD! Lisa and David Ablon
