Album Notes

Deconstructing Haydn Presents the Haydn C major cello concerto with the Modern Chamber Orchestra in 2 versions. First as written, with a beautiful period instrument feel. Second, as a Deconstruction of the work through improvisation - the whole orchestra and soloist improvise based on the themes of the Haydn Concerto.

Walter Thompson Conducts the orchestra with his "SoundPainting" system of gestures, guiding the large group through a completely new piece of music based on the Haydn Concerto.

The CD was recorded at Clinton Studios in New York City, and is of audiophile quality using the best vintage and modern microphones available.

The sound and style of what you will hear on this CD is completely new. The cadenza's are fully improvised, and for those who know the piece of music well, you will note some possibly striking choices made in the classical rendition. Never fussy or overdone, it is a fresh look at this well recorded piece of music. The improvised version is like nothing you've heard before, unless you are familiar with Walter Thompson's work. Theme's and structures are freely woven into the new composition, which is always close to the original score, and yet has moments when there is no clear meter or key, or where different themes are overlapped to create a ....well a SoundPainting !

Haydn in Heaven
author: your humble correspondent
This CD is a day in the life of Haydn up in heaven. He starts out by himself, everything's mellow and beautiful, nothing's over-produced. (His pet peeve is these classical CDs nowadays where every piece is at a break-neck speed and engineered so perfectly it might as well be programmed on a synthesizer). Then he decides to go to the community center to hang out with his cronies, namely, Salvador Dali, Darius Milhaud, Franz Kamin (visiting in a dream), and all hell breaks loose. But I mean that in a good way.
