Gina Ferrera's spark for rhythm and drumming began at the age of ten. She has toured internationally playing percussion, drums and singing. Her music is influenced by the study of African music. Gina plays the gyil (an traditional mallet keyboard from northwest Ghana). Additionally, Ferrera performs music from Cuba, Nigeria, Brazil, Ghana and Zimbabwe. Her instruments include drum-set, bata drums, shekere, conga, Ewe drums and Shona Dzavadzimu mbira. Gina commingles ancient instrumentation with creative expression and electronic beats. In the spirit of bringing together global cultures, The Philadelphia Gyil Fusion Project is a creative live-music collective and a recording/production team currently featuring thirty of Philadelphia's most talented and innovative musicians blending various styles of world fusion music.
The Philadelphia Gyil Fusion Project is a tribute and reinterpretation of traditional gyil music. The gyil (dʒile or dʒil) is a pentatonic xylophone from the northwest of Ghana. It is the primary musical instrument played by the Dagara, Lobi and Birifor people.
