"Hey would you look into why my heart has come unglued..." so goes the song "Foolin' Around," from the new album "Rock n Roll Pony", by Gina Villalobos, summing up the exquisite attitude that permeates this great CD, an attitude of anti -ambition and acceptance, of anger shrouded in heartbreakingly beautiful minor chords, of beer soaked honky-tonk humility crossed with a lip biting defiance.
Gina’s nothing if not dead serious. Her music is deeply rooted in time, place, and history. She’s the real thing: an artist, someone who can show you where you are. Her songs serve as a map to roots rock heaven, where we hear music so gorgeous, raw, and sexy we wonder why we don't hear songs like them anywhere else. Gina's cool guarded voice, in it's restraint, elevates the songs to a subtle, cerebral ecstasy. Her band emits a narcotic blend of country rock and glistening harmonic shimmer, it's a powerful seductive thing.

Gina's latest cd is brilliant...clever lyrics, strong yet sweet vocals, masterful musicianship and a whole lot of talent. My faves are "California", "Not Enough", "Fooling Around", and "Faded". Rock N Roll Pony's got it all from start to finish. It's a crime Gina's not all over the airwaves.

A marvellous album
author: Gert van den Hof
A Dutch cd shop told the readers on its mailinglist that it had discovered a great talent, but that her cd wasn't for sale in the Netherlands (but it managed to buy a number in the States). So I went to CDBaby and ordered it without listening to one track and I wasn't disappointed for one moment. A sensational mix of rock and folk. I am hooked to her!

gina's best

The textire and atmosphere on this one is tops, especially with all that pedal steel. Gina's lost a little grit from her voice but gained a commanding songwriting ability- "California" is a sweet knockout, and she doesn't let up for the whole album.
