Album Notes

Bassist Gordon Johnson returns with his fourth in a series of piano trio jazz recordings, GJ4. All four of Johnson’s“Trios” releases share a common modus operandi – the artful and distinguished bassist contemplates drummers and
pianists he would like to unite with his bass, he plucks them from the local clubs and off the stages of national tours, and he gets them into the studio to see what possibilities the trio holds. On GJ4, the musical empathy that is evident
between unsung young pianists and drumming icons, some old friends from the road, and a celebrated pair of experimental darlings, is anything but common. Minneapolis-based Gordy Johnson, who has toured the world with the likes of Maynard Ferguson, proves to be as adept at assembling inspired one-off trios as he is brilliant on the bass.
"GJ4" featured pianists; Bill Carrothers, Laura Caviani, Frank Kimbrough, Bryan Nichols & Tanner Taylor. "GJ4" featured drummers; David King, Phil Hey, Steve Smith, Todd Strait & Matt Wilson.

Every group Gordy is part of has so much life in it. He hangs with the best musicians. They're all rhythm people who don't let moss grow under their notes. Watching him play trios with his gifted friends shows that the energy radiates from him. I've never seen anyone on more intimate terms with his instrument and/or his ensemble(s).
