Clear air music
author: Paul Bergen
I already had his phenomenal Now There is a Tree of Ghosts and after a few years this became available again and it was certainly worth the wait. Its a little less traditional overall than the other one but other than the justly praised Boll Weevil I was blown away by With Father in the Woods. Its an original rather than sampled piece and plays off that curious mixture of hell centred gothic Christianity crossed with dark mythic ritual to render a song that runs shivers down your spine. But what I like about all his work, other than seems so worthy (so respective) of its source material, is that it all sounds as though it was taking place in a sunlit space. Fresh air seems to blow through all his music...I've never had that feeling about any other music. His death was a great loss to music.

An Excellent Album

This is a beautiful, inspired album. The Lomax field recordings are not simply sampled, but instead made the centerpiece of each song. The music is atmospheric and evocative.

5 out of 5 stars

This music is ghostly haunting and certainly is created by a soulful person. It has as wonderful American flavor in identity and spirit. Overall, very danceable and fun in a tribal, clan, gang-like way

Great execution of a wonderful concept--old and new meld with such beauty.

I first heard "Boll Weevil" on KCRW and I was hooked. There's such passion and soul in the old recordings that Greg samples--and then he blends them with fantastic beats and twangs. It's rare when you preview an album and your jaw drops in disbelief at how great it is. I'm buying this one right away. Can't wait for it to enrich my L.A. commute.
