Great Glaze!!

Much as I've enjoyed Glaze's other albums, I'd have to say on early listening this one is my fave. I think Laurie Lewis & the 'guest' musicians bring an energy & creative 'drive' that's really exceptional. Her voice is a great mix of sweet and 'tough' too. I love the way the Jean Ritchie songs are grouped and form a kind of extended 'interlude' in the middle. And a very nice mix of ballad & more 'uptempo' material. Nice to discover all those songs by Robert Ralph Carlson too. One of the best 'Left Coast Bluegrass' albums I've heard in quite awhile, & so far, one of my favorite albums of '08.

Green Kentucky Blues

I've been listening to Suzie and her wonderful band for a couple of years now. She has always produced astonishingly rich albums, offering stunning renditions of the haunting Jean Ritchie classics, moving tunes by Iris Dement, Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, and other notable artists. Her work is at once eclectic and very specific. Timeless. This is no more evident than in her latest offering, "Green Kentucky Blues". It contains the greatest version I've ever heard of Bob Dylan's "Lay Down Your Weary Tune Lay Down", and that's saying something when it's been done by the Byrds and by Bobby himself! Jean Ritchie's "West Virginia Mining Disaster" has the solemnity of a religious experience. Songwriter Rob Carlson and Suzie perform the magic of bringing us brand new , fresh, stimulating tunes that feel like they have always been there in our collective psyche ---that they are part of our musical heritage. They're all so good,it's misleading to pick a standout, but I have to say that "I Only Dream of You" is simply the best tune ----in any genre---that I have heard in a number of years. You hear this song and you don't want it to ever end. Suzie and Rick Cunha give us Carlson's lyrics quietly and meaningfully. We long for the bittersweet balm of Sundown with them. I love this song! A final note. If you get a chance to see Suzie and her band "live", don't pass it up. It's always a great show.
