Album Notes

KCSN writes: "Susie Glaze does something with a song that only great singers can do...she grabs hold of a song's deepest emotion and purpose and wraps it tightly around your soul." Folk music legend Jean Ritchie has called Susie Glaze "a fresh young voice - a communicator - to me the most important of qualities in a singer..." and Bluegrass Unlimited calls her "an important voice on the California Bluegrass scene."

The featured players on this title include nationally-recognized names in the music's genre, including the producer herself, Laurie Lewis, a legendary player, award-winning composer and recording artist for the past 20 years. The players include Herb Pedersen (a venerated Southern California recording artist for over 20 years), Dennis Caplinger (Los Angeles' go-to session player for fiddle and banjo), Rick Cunha (long-time session and touring artist with such artists as Emmylou Harris and Linda Rondstadt), young Nashville dobro phenom Mike Witcher, Old-time stars Tom Sauber and banjo son Patrick Sauber, bassist Bill Bryson (formerly of the Dusty Rose Band), Lewis' long-time musical partner, mandolinist Tom Rozum and the genius songwriter Rob Carlson, whose 7 new songs on this album are new classics of Acoustic Americana/Roots/Folk/Bluegrass fusion. These and songs by Iris Dement, Jean Ritchie and Bob Dylan fill out the 12-song roster. Lewis' arrangement of "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" is a new milestone for Dylan's classic.

Susie's last CD "Blue Eyed Darlin'" was the winner of the Just Plain Folks 2006 Music Awards for Best Roots Album, and Folkworks Magazine's Pick for Best Bluegrass Album of 2005. Rob Carlson's seven songs on this new album are new bluegrass classics. Hear these and songs of Jean Ritchie, Iris Dement and Bob Dylan. Tracks include "Maggie Bailey" "Green Kentucky Blues" Iris Dement's "Hotter Than Mojave In My Heart," Jean Ritchie's classic "The L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore" and Dylan's "Lay Down Your Weary Tune." Entertainment Weekly writes "...she can blow the roof off any joint lucky enough to book her."

Great Glaze!!

Much as I've enjoyed Glaze's other albums, I'd have to say on early listening this one is my fave. I think Laurie Lewis & the 'guest' musicians bring an energy & creative 'drive' that's really exceptional. Her voice is a great mix of sweet and 'tough' too. I love the way the Jean Ritchie songs are grouped and form a kind of extended 'interlude' in the middle. And a very nice mix of ballad & more 'uptempo' material. Nice to discover all those songs by Robert Ralph Carlson too. One of the best 'Left Coast Bluegrass' albums I've heard in quite awhile, & so far, one of my favorite albums of '08.

Green Kentucky Blues

I've been listening to Suzie and her wonderful band for a couple of years now. She has always produced astonishingly rich albums, offering stunning renditions of the haunting Jean Ritchie classics, moving tunes by Iris Dement, Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, and other notable artists. Her work is at once eclectic and very specific. Timeless. This is no more evident than in her latest offering, "Green Kentucky Blues". It contains the greatest version I've ever heard of Bob Dylan's "Lay Down Your Weary Tune Lay Down", and that's saying something when it's been done by the Byrds and by Bobby himself! Jean Ritchie's "West Virginia Mining Disaster" has the solemnity of a religious experience. Songwriter Rob Carlson and Suzie perform the magic of bringing us brand new , fresh, stimulating tunes that feel like they have always been there in our collective psyche ---that they are part of our musical heritage. They're all so good,it's misleading to pick a standout, but I have to say that "I Only Dream of You" is simply the best tune ----in any genre---that I have heard in a number of years. You hear this song and you don't want it to ever end. Suzie and Rick Cunha give us Carlson's lyrics quietly and meaningfully. We long for the bittersweet balm of Sundown with them. I love this song! A final note. If you get a chance to see Suzie and her band "live", don't pass it up. It's always a great show. Jude Ciccolella ay down
