Glen Baker Album My Blood
Review by www.Balconytv.ie Monday, October 20th, 2008.
Glen Baker’s eleven-track debut is a labour of love. It’s probably not easy being a musician when you’re the son of the great Don Baker. It must be even harder to carve your own path when harmonica is your weapon of choice. Even a minor slip of the tongue, excuse the pun, could result in cries of “Heresy!” from angry fans of his famous father. It’s lucky then, for Glen that he can play harmonica with the best of them.
‘My Blood’, the album under the microscope, is a meaty slice of modern blues. Glen busts out the harmonica on the first track, ‘Rainbows’ and shatters any fears that he might be about to put the harm on your eardrums. That was my last pun, I promise.
‘Blinded By Society’ sounds almost like London post-punk outfit The The, with an infectious acoustic guitar lick and electronic pulse throughout the verses. Glen’s emotional vocal also brings to mind Matt Johnson’s opinionated grunting on The The’s 1989 magnum opus, ‘Mind Bomb’.
‘My Blood’ is a soulful plea to a brother on the brink. A wailing, heartbreaking backing vocal by Noreen Rabbit pushes an already great song through the stratosphere. If Mr. Baker is attempting to emulate modern Motown, he nailed it. Songs like this deserve to be in the charts.
The rest of the album is equally impressive. ‘Sweet Melody’ is a carefree number with a most definitely danceable tempo. ‘Sell Your Soul’ brings to mind the simplicity of Gomez or Beta Band but still maintains Glen’s signature blues sound.
If you have any interest in supporting Irish music, you would be doing it a great service by logging on to cdbaby and buying this album. If you have even a passing interest in modern blues or soul, give Glen baker a listen. If you enjoyed this review, you are probably already a fan of Glen Baker. If not, you will be once you’ve heard him. - THE LANDLORD
Glen Baker Album My Blood HOT PRESS CD review by Jackie Hayden
FRESH FROM THE BAKER
Glen Baker is the son of the illustrious Don and he has a fine debut album on the loose. It has superb harmonica from Baker junior, especially on the two opening tracks.
‘Rainbows’ is a sturdy mid–tempo rock track with a touch of blues, as well as being a worthy showcase for Baker’s excellent vocal. ‘Blinded By Society’ is rhythmically looser, and is a passionate song about what society does to the vulnerable individual. ‘My Blood’ is a smouldering, introspective soul ballad, with tasty guitar work and stirring vocals from Baker and backing singer Noreen Rabbit. His songs have the scent of real life and courage in the face of daunting challenges, and deserve your attention.

Glen Baker
Dublin Man Glen Baker has put together this fine debut album of eleven tracks that bring you on a journey of Glen's inner soul both blues and the love and passion to play, Glen has a very laid back and soulful tone coming from his voice on this album, track three "My Blood" is the highlight on the album for me, but not excluding the other ten tracks as they have the same high quality and production, the lyrics and arrangement are both very enjoyable this album has radio potential and even greater things.....

Great Listen

As a harmonica player myself I enjoyed the non traditional slant to this effort. Great voice I would love to hear him sing with James Hunter or Rusty Zinn. Solid song writing. I am a long time fan of his Dad Don Baker as an actor and musican.
Please tour the USA.
