Album Notes

Hi. Here's the quick version: I was born to a pair of scientists in Santa Barbara, CA at the end of 1970. I had a Rush-wannabe band in jr. high called "Destiny", but I really don't want to talk about that. When I was 14, I met a guy named Todd Nichols in our school's production of Our Town, and we started writing songs together. We got together with a couple other kids and started a band called Toad the Wet Sprocket. Our first album was recorded for $600 in a tract home in '87. In '89 we were signed by Columbia records, who put out our first two records as-is, and who we recorded 3 more albums for. We toured pretty constantly, and were lucky enough to be on the radio a few times. It's a little blurry, to be frank.

The band broke up in '98, and I started touring solo acoustic. I've put out 3 solo records, a live record, two EPs, and a side project with the members of Nickel Creek called the Mutual Admiration society. I've had a couple record deals (at least I can say I was on Lost Highway for a minute), played a boatload of shows, and have been slowly gaining the ears of the more adult-oriented singer-songwriter world despite my pop background. I have three rather exceptional daughters, one exceptional wife, and a friendly but generally unexceptional dog. I had a one of those post-record deal bitter / anxious / depressed periods for about a decade, but I'm feeling much better now, thank you. I hope it lasts.
