Album Notes

GMC formed in the small Swedish town Järna. Under the influence of Palace Brothers and some beautiful landscapes we recorded a few songs in an old barn and started to do live gigs. Months turned to years, some families were created and others were dissolved, but we continued to play small gigs at bars and cafés and after a while we had a band.

The next step was to record an album. Figuring that since we are almost everybody from Västerbotten in the north of Sweden we best go there to record. We relocated to an old school house owned by a friend of ours. We recorded for a week and it´s a week that will stay with us forever. The Ep we recorded(”thegrandmalconsortiumEP”(WGCD002) turned out pretty decent to. Released in early 2005 it made some impact on the internet and our gigs become more frequent and bigger.

Some more time passed. Babies arrived and life was lived. Then, in early 2006, the opportunity to buy an old Hotel in the small, sleepy town of Vindeln, Västerbotten appeared.

We bought it and built a recording studio in the basement. We named her Marta-Lis after the previous owner of the hotel. There we recorded ”…and the night will walk a dead one once again EP”(WGCD001).During this recording session the idea of releasing one EP every six month were born. We prefer to keep things simple with casual recording sessions where you can vary band settings, format, instruments and so on. Publish it on the internet and keep doing small and big shows, go fishing and spend time with the family. Studio Marta-Lis gives us that opportunity.

GMC makes relevant music and we will remain relevant for some time to come. Good for GMC, good for You and good for the future of Swedish music. GMC embodies the idealism, the melancholy, the wild mood swings and the universal love of a beautiful pop tune that lives in all of our hearts.

You are hereby invited.

This album is like the last moment of twilight when the darkness ends and the light softly hits your face. The harmonies are the light. The melodies create the magical transition.

Sweden's Grand Mal Consortium are an exemplary folk pop band, taking advantage of modern technology while still writing songs that are about the SONG. Their bouncy rhythms are deceptive when put up against some of the more somber lyrics, but overall, the album has a fantastically sparkly quality to it, and is simply stacked with ear-popping melodies and their complimentary harmonies. While a guitar plays an arpeggio, an organ cascades through the scene, right along the cheeky lyrics and the pumping rhythms. With acts like Peter Bjorn and John emerging from Scandinavia, it might be tempting to stack these folks on the pile, but their craft is just as honed as the afore mentioned hitmakers, and their music is more lush... more filled out. It borders on chamber pop, but it's got that Swedish sweetness to it that makes it even more agreeable.
