The compilation album

"Hail to the Thief II: Songs to Send Bush Packing!"

promises to be a funny, and serious, take on the upcoming election, the right-wing Republican agenda, and of course George "Dubya" Bush. The album's 20 tracks lay out the case against Bush in songs and stories.

This collection features some of the country's best-known folksingers, including Tom Paxton, Utah Phillips, Kim and Reggie Harris, the duo Magpie, and Faith Petric.

Also featured on the CD are hardworking, traveling folk musicians from around the country: Steve Brooks, Joe Jencks, Mark Levy, Amy Martin, Lisa Rogers, and the new duo "emma's revolution", which features Pat Humphries and Sandy O. San Francisco's Labor Heritage-Rockin' Solidarity Chorus and bowed-saw player Chris Bricker round out the album.

The project was conceived and produced by George Mann and 88-year-old executive producer Julius Margolin. George and Julius contribute five songs to the album and produced the first "Hail to the Thief!" CD in August 2001. They are members of the New York City Labor Chorus and performers with seven CDs and years of singing between them. Mann compiled the CD from more than 50 songs submitted by songwriters around the country.

"Julius and I have always believed the 2000 election was stolen in Florida," Mann said. "Virtually everything Bush has done in the past four years has been a failure and embarrassment to this country, let alone caused suffering here and abroad." George and Julius decided to produce the album to help raise awareness through the power of its songs, and to motivate folks to vote Bush out in November. "We want a fair election, a safer world, and a government that is a world partner, not prone to unilateral action without consequence," Mann said.

"Our aim is for a government of the people, by the people and for the people to finally be established in the USA," says Faith Petric, who has been singing for more than 30 years and is based in San Francisco. "This CD helps push us in that direction. Sing along!"

This is not your typical record production team. Julius turned 88 in August and is a lifetime activist and union delegate. George teamed up with Julius in 1999 and they sing and record left-of-center folk and labor songs. "We stand with all these great artists against George Bush," said Julius. "This election is one of the most important I've seen in my life, and we want to help defeat George Bush with this album."

  • When Making a Difference can be Fun

    For everyone who knows the score when it comes to World Politics this album gives passion and entertainment, a rousing foray even in its quitest, gentler moments. The Artists deliver to their audience with respect and dignity (something altogether alien to the subjects of the songs) and show that laughter is a most powerful weapon.

    Bush is undisputably the worst, most dishonest, most disgusting public figure of my 67 year life. My dad introduced me to politics at an early age since he was a journalist in DC, so I have some cred. This cd is both hilarious and mad as hell. Should be heard by everyone at least 20 times.

    Good collection of quite a few styles of music with one aim in common--to skewer the president--and not just skewer him on his obvious inability to think and eat pretzels at the same time--but on how he has (mis)handled the wars (or the need for them in the first place), (mis)handled the economy, public policy etc. "Bless His Heart" reminds me a bit of the 1940s musical style.

    I do a folk/protest song show on a community radio station and this CD has given me enough material a year's worth of shows!! "I'm George W.", "Bushwhacked", "It's About Oil" and "If I Only Had a Brain" are all instant classics.

    It is another great rendition of songs that would not let you untouched. They do send you thinking and contemplating and yes... they bite and gladden your heart at the same time, tickling your toes and shivering your spine, hitting hard with their topicality.

    "Hail to the Thief II: Songs to Send Bush Packing" starts with a rousing rendition of “Hail to the Chief” played on kazoo and saw, followed by Utah Phillips’ “Stupid’s Pledge”, a parody of the ever popular Pledge of Allegiance, George Mann’s “I’m George W.” (another parody to the tune of O’ Susanna), Steve Brooks’ “Bush Whacked” , Tom Paxton’s “In Florida”, “If You Were My Son, I’d Whack you One” featuring Faith Petric, well you get the idea. But don’t be fooled this is not only a levity driven sardonic view of this current regime. With strong commentary from Utah Phillips about the state of the homeless in our country in “The World From the Bottom Up and Other Observations” , and Julius Margolin’s anti-war, pro-humanity treatise “I Don’t Want To Be A Soldier”, Joe Jencks' powerful letter from Iraq in “Dear Mr. President”, and other thought provoking moments woven through just to make sure that the listener doesn’t forget that it is a very serious topic this collection of merry troubadours are presenting. That being said, you can still find plenty to smile and keep time with in a mixture folk, country, pop, Texas swing, even chorale. I recommend that everyone buy a copy of the CD , take it to your next social gathering, and sing along. It’ll make you feel better.
