"Diagnosis" is the fourth album by Gnomus, the improvising guitar-keyboards-drums trio from Helsinki, Finland. It is also their fourth release on the Fiasko Records label, but whereas the three previous – "Gnomus" (2000), "II" (2004) and the limited edition "28 août 2005" (2005) - were live albums, "Diagnosis" is the first Gnomus album to have been recorded entirely in a studio. (To be more precise: Markku Veijonsuo's state-of-the-art Varistoteles studio with an incredible combination of both vintage and modern studio equipment).
In contrast to the long improvisations that are essential to the Gnomus live performances, the studio environment enabled the group to improvise shorter segments which would have sounded out of place or too fragmentary in a concert situation. The result is a collection of nine improvised tracks that feature sonic fantasies previously unheard on Gnomus albums (or concerts).
Musicians: Mika Kallio (drums), Kari Ikonen (keyboards, voice), Esa Onttonen (guitar).
"This new album, divided in logical sections, is like a soundtrack showing a new world. This might be their most adventurous release to date, using a rather groundbreaking talent, because with a seemingly irrationality of sound, they succeed in remaining logical with it, natural and extremely explorative." -Psyche van het folk
