Album Notes

Marcus Goldhaber is a welcome addition to the music world with an intimate approach to straight-ahead Jazz. Marcus sings with comfortable ease and though his sound has been compared to that of John Pizzarelli, Chet Baker and a young Frank Sinatra, he definitely has a unique style that is rooted in the beauty of a simple melody.

Growing up, Marcus was introduced to the wonderful music of Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cahn, Peggy Lee and many others at a very young age. His mother was always playing songs from this genre that she had learned as a child on their 1928 Ivers & Pond upright piano and passing them on as they were once passed on to her. This is still a common practice.

In 2000, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from SUNY Fredonia and then went directly to NYC, where he began working as an actor. After the shows, he would often sit in on various jam sessions around town. After a successful start to his career in the theatre with several Off-Broadway productions, appearances on CBS’s Guiding Light and a solid amount of regional work, he decided to take a more focused approach towards his music career.
Based in NYC, Marcus has studied with Mark Murphy, Norma Garbo, Marianne Challis, Alix Korey and Russ Kassoff. He has also had the opportunity to perform with several Jazz greats such as James Weidman, Eric Frazier, Lou Columbo, Eric Lewis, Peter Hand and Lafayette Harris.

Since June of 2005, he has played NYC venues, including: The Carnegie Club, Creole, The Lenox Lounge, Smoke, Cleopatra’s Needle, The Ritz Carlton, Crobar, Vertigo, and the illustrious Friar’s Club, of which he is a proud member.

Marcus has given outdoor concerts at NYC’s Worldwide Plaza and in Central Park and has most recently played at the AOL Time Warner Center. For the past year he has maintained residency in the jazz lounge at Penang (Upper West Side) on Sunday nights. Recently, Marcus spent the month of August in Upstate NY, singing a tribute to the music of Tony Bennett to sold out crowds.

On “THE MOMENT AFTER”, Marcus teams up with piano great, Jon Davis (toured w/Jaco Pastorius, Joe Henderson), Paul Gabrielson on bass (Mingus Big Band and Kingston Trio), Kyle Struve on drums (Frank Lacey, Walter Blanding), and Will Terrill also on drums (Benny Golson, recorded w/Betty Carter).

This album was recorded and mixed at Acoustic Recording by Michael Brorby (Ron Carter, Fred Hersch, Jon Ellis) and mastered by A.T Michael MacDonald (Kenny Werner, Jeff “Tain” Watts, John Hicks), at Algorhythms, NYC.

“THE MOMENT AFTER” is available on FALLEN APPLE RECORDS.

...A honey smooth and gentle voice.

CD Review: Marcus Goldhaber - The Moment After 4/4 O's Notes: Marcus is a new man on the block, a crooner with a honey smooth and gentle voice. The trio behind him, Jon Davis (p), Paul Gabrielson (b) and Kyle Struve (d) is tight and very supportive adding impressive fills when Goldhaber isn't singing and keeping the mood right. Among the best are "Honeysuckle Rose", "Wrap Your Troubles In Drekate smithams" and "That Old Feeling". The pace is cool and everything comes together well. We think Marcus will be winning hearts for a while.

November 17, 2006 - CD Review Marcus Goldhaber's "The Moment After": Sensually intelligent and stylish. Just listen to Goldhaber's "Like Someone in Love" and you will realize that this man can sing with style, originality and challenging romance. "The Moment After" is cleverly crafted, vivacious and happy. The bass is right on, the piano is eloquent, and the splashes of the drums sparkle. I love this album. It is a blend of a free form smooth jazz blended into unorthodox musical virtuosity and richly evocative voice. Two thumbs up. Buy it. You will enjoy it.
