Album Notes

The Good Night is a new band risen from the ashes of an old band, L.A.’s the Cosmic Giggle. Together since 1998, the Giggle finally collapsed in 2006, only to reform a month later with all of its original members. Though as the Giggle they recorded four full-length records, this is their first as the Good Night, and their first with producer J.J. Blair.

The Good Night is a rock band with an acrobatic sense of melody sadly lacking in most modern music. Three of the four members have a background in jazz, which gives them the nimbleness required to pull off the sharp turns written into the songs. But though this is adventurous music, it is still very poppy. Songwriter Tom Jackson has been called a “hooksman” for his dedication to the craftsmanship of infectious musical moments. Every song, in fact, has been painstakingly arranged for maximum affect.

They’ve been compared to 10cc, pre-1998 Weezer, the Beatles, Marcy Playground, and Elvis Costello among others.

Tom Jackson (vocals, guitar) and Greg McFall (bass, vocals) began playing music together in high school in San Jose, California. Alan Chang, at the time, was a pre-pubescent piano prodigy at a nearby Junior High. In college, Greg met Brad Ranola (drums) and the band began to take shape. They moved to LA, and after four albums and over a hundred shows (that last part might be an exaggeration) they changed their name and met with producer J.J. Blair.

This record is the fruit of a two-year collaboration with Mr. Blair at his home studio in the Hollywood hills.

I highly recommend this CD, as I do their earlier Cosmic Giggle CDs. It is entertainment at the highest level. You'll never be bored and you will find yourself smiling most of the time. Catchy lyrics, melodies, and beats make this a CD you will want to listen to over and over and over. I do, and I can't get enough!
