"Leah-Carla Gordone is a powerful, authentic singer who voices her convictions through her poetic songs. In a way she is a throwback to the best traditions of the 60's. Simultaneously, she leads the cutting edge of the new millennium for those who appreciate music as substance rather than style and hope for it to 'light the way.'"
- Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary)
Shortly after moving to Columbus, Ohio, Leah-Carla Gordone opened for Norah Jones and The Indigo Girls at Promowest Pavilion. Summer 2007 made her fifth year of being selected to perform at Columbus' well-known annual COMFEST - a 3-day/6-stage outdoor music festival. She was honored to be invited to sing the opening national anthem solo a cappella at the North American Fencing Cup Championship, Columbus Convention Center before an audience of hundreds of attendees and participants, all standing at attention. She has been selected twice to perform at The All Biz Record Label Showcase.
"Gordone combines the intensity of Alanis Morissette and the sensitivity of Norah Jones...A modern day Carly Simon with a touch of Joni Mitchell thrown in for good measure."
- Laura E. Phillips, Music Connection Magazine
Leah-Carla Gordone has received critical acclaim for her performance intensity and compelling stage presence as well as for both her CDs: "Dancing On The Dragon" and "Butterfly Child". Both 11-song albums, as well as her third newly released album, "Phoenix From The Ashes: Rise" (13 songs) were independently composed, arranged, performed and produced by her. Her music captures elements of rock, soul, folk, and pop with some alt and funk - and classical elements brought in by stringed instruments. Gordone likes to call herself a pop/rock/soul diva but says her music defies categorization. She says she's "breaking new ground with a new sound, for a new era", and believes she is part of a shift that is coming about in mainstream music as we know it - a "music revolution" she calls it. Her voice has been described as sultry, genuine, gut-wrenching, song bird, angelic, soulful, fragile, husky, raw, powerful, unique and incomparable.
Born and raised in the heart of New York City, Leah-Carla is the daughter of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Charles Gordone, the first playwright of African American descent to win the Prize. She began singing, acting, and dancing professionally as a child and went on, after being chosen among hundreds, to be one the few teenagers to attend the renowned Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Performing and the Arts ("FAME") as a drama major. As a Theater Arts major at SUNY New Paltz, she was chosen to star in the musical "Cabaret". She was selected to perform at Boston's NEMO Music Showcase and toured with "Indiegrrl" through seven states and has been a featured artist on their website.
While her debut CD, "Butterfly Child" captured a fragile essence, and let us glimpse her struggles and vision through lyrics that took you on an intensely personal journey, Gordone's "Dancing On The Dragon" celebrates life and its challenging lessons. Gordone says her third CD, "Phoenix From The Ashes: Rise", will, "blow people's minds!". She hopes to land some of its songs into film soundtracks as well as television. "This forthcoming CD is the answer to many of the questions asked on my first and second albums. It is the completion of a journey, in a way...a coming home to one's self. Although soul-searching can be an ongoing process, there comes a time in one's life when one finally feels complete and whole. We all long for that feeling." She is very excited about the revealing of her latest project, a 13 song CD, jam- packed with contagious hooks and predictable Gordone passion. From acoustic solo songs to R&B-like tracks with smokin' beats to Rock 'n' Roll, Gordone feels there will be something for everyone on this album!
