Album Notes

this record is not background music. and those not accustomed to unaccompanied songs, you are in for a rare treat! ellen's stunning voice is more than enough to carry the collection to the end.

ellen is a singer of traditional ballads. her repertoire is made up of songs from the child and warner collections as well as others, and of those learned from singers like herself who love the old songs. her rich, sonorous voice brings a unique color to the genre: it’s admittedly a bit too pretty and polished to compete with the powerful sounds delivered by the truly traditional southern singers. however, her earnestness and devotion earn ellen a place alongside these great singers.

and although she doesn't intentionally imitate them, ellen has learned a few important things over the years, from the singing of jean ritchie, jean redpath, joan baez and others, about the intimate, selfless delivery of a good, old, tragic tale.

The songs on this CD have all survived the years and so will the artist. Ellen Gozion has a gift for storytelling. This CD contains a variety of music performed with wisdom and tenderness and a touch of melancholy. Ellen Gozion's voice has the timbre of rich drinking chocolate and the lilt of a spring afternoon. I love the ballad songs on this CD and Ellen's voice! I hope Ms. Gozion will release further CD's. I've about worn this one out.

Both the vocal and instrumental music on this CD are top quality, with a clarity and simplicity that authenticates these old pieces. My copy was given to me by a friend, and I was so impressed I've already begun spreading it around myself. The listener will find a full platter here, more than their money's worth. I was only disappointed when I discovered this was Ms. Gozion's only CD. I hope she will soon make more, since her voice has both the purity of a woman singing in the mountains and the excellence of a well-trained voice.

It was awesome! My soon-to-be-husband saw this CD in Pittsburgh Magazine. I bought it for him and we've both enjoyed listening to it immensely. We look forward to another CD.
