Album Notes

This band of seasoned performers and guests met monthly for Tuesday night gigs at an unassuming local tavern. They played their blues with total commitment and pure motives; they were just getting it all out!

But Blues On Tues, as it became known, could never have been a quiet affair. The new band was the ultimate collaboration of Eastern Canadian bluesmen; it quickly began packing local venues and garnering influential plaudits.

Bernie St-Laurent of CBC Radio discovered the All-Stars and before long, the band added to its schedule two appearances on the Labatt's Blue Stage at the highly-acclaimed 2002 Montreal International Jazz Festival. The All-Stars' rare blend of original material and reinvigorated classics was a hit and led to a second appearance at the festival, in 2004! The Gazette in Montreal selected the band as its Pick of the Day, calling The Granary Blues All-Stars' gig "the most interesting free show."

Between them, the All-Stars have had their fair share of demanding schedules, but, following the release of their aptly-titled first CD, "Again," they show no signs of slowing down. They are taking to the road in response to demand from a fan base that is now growing across country borders and continents. Gary W. Miller of the popular e-zine, Blueswax, made the first appeal, writing, "The Granary Blues All-stars are my kind of band. Don't hide it!" And, in reviewing "Again," Real Blues magazine said, "This is one of the best good-time live albums in Canadian music history. Fans of Canadian Blues will find mucho entertainment on this disc."

None of the All-Stars is a stranger to such recognition. They have an incredible record of appearances with international stars from Europe and beyond, and with true legends from the United States. Listen to The Granary Blues All-Stars: you'll hear how these men have been touched by the legends of the blues; you'll hear a beautifully unselfish merger of original musical voices; you'll hear genuine all-stars, playing natural blues in perfect company.

"I especially enjoyed this CD and the band should come to the US for some exposure. The Granary Blues All-stars are my kind of band. They may be covers, but they are some of the best I've heard. There is real talent here. D'on't hide it." - Gary W. Miller, Blueswax

It is a real surprise nowadays to receive a CD from an unknown group that raises the hackles on your neck. The Granary Blues All-Stars hail from Vankleek Hill, Ontario. Where the hell is that? And why do those folks only get to hear this group of five, dyed in the wool, hard-core Blues musicians once a week? Ordinarily, a group like that wouldn't get any notice at all. Sorry, but I can't help it—they are just too good for words. Aside from two originals, this CD is mostly comprised of covers. I wish the All-Stars played just down the road from me. I would go every night. There is very nice recording technique and the live and in your face, Soul-smeared cover material shines with an original and precise sheen. It's like hearing a lot of this material for the first time, as it is so expertly done, yet, it retains a loose feel, a certain intimate knowledge of the genre and particular tune that at once puts you right in the groove. ..no doubt, as you only have to hear this CD once to know that you'd be there every night, too. - quite nice credentials. It shows, as their interpretation of "Born Under A Bad Sign," with its sax lead, opens up a new window on that tune. The inspired and true interpretation of "Big Chief" is an exciting groove. Curtis Mayfield's "Check Out Your Mind" is very nice. Their version of "Ain't Nobody's Business" is a treat, with some fine, soulful guitar. "Bo Diddley Is A Gunslinger," what a groove! This band can lay it down and get the same feel as the original. "New Mown Lawn" and "When I Come Back" are both Terry Gillespie originals that work all the way. You're gonna like this CD. This is a very soulful group and deserves to be heard.
