notes

This album was recorded over the course of three days in October '99.

"Ladies' Love Oracle is me in the raw, me in the dark, me in the basement.

Sometimes a sketch says more than a mural." - Grant-Lee Phillips

Ladies' Love Oracle may be said to be comparable to other works by Grant Lee Buffalo (particularly the more acoustic outings) and comparable, in the sparseness and spontaneity of its production, to certain early John Lennon solo recordings as well as Robyn Hitchcock's acoustic based LP, "I Often Dream Of Trains."

  • can i come play in your basement?
    author: DJ HYJYNX

You really shouldn't be able to sound this amazing just "recording in your basement for a few days" That's just plain unfair. Hauntingly beautiful, this album will ensnare your soul and take you away to many places, all of them beautiful and entrancing. Just put it in, sit back, and enjoy the ride... Especially the finale, "Snowflake" wow. It is so ispiring to hear an album like this, done by one man and not a host of producers and mixers, etc. It gives me fuel that will drive my soul to my own "basement" and unlock the magic that lies within.

  • Slow in places with a few outstanding tracks
    author: Emdeeuk

Having owned Grant Lee Buffalo's Mighty Joe Moon for years and year and loving it to pieces I bought this and Mobilize together. I listened to this first (to appreciate chronological order) and was a little disappointed at some of the song. Grant-Lee's voice is amazing as always but he doesn't really show that off at all on this album. Flaming Shoe, Squint and St Expedite are the outstanding tracks of this album. I think some of the other tracks will grow on me when listened to in other set ups, having mainly listened to this on my walkman to and from work.

  • Great stuff
    author: Robert

Great voice, with some stick-in-your-mind songs. "Heavenly," "Nothing is for sure," and "St. Expedite" are great, the others are just just very very good.

  • Bobby bluesox this is stufabulantastic!!
author: Jacky Jo Johnson (a.k.a. Wacky JO)

Wacky JO here reporting from musical musicianshipville saying yikey my spikey! I am an old-time newcomer with a fresh sense of old newness. Let me first say that Grant Lee is fresh newness with some oldness and newness that makes this senseless but not useless! I can't believe I lived for 44 old-time years without the newness, non-useless, greatness, of the Grantness! My princess also enjoys the newness of the oldness plus the freshness of its hotness. What an absolutley astonshishing piece of absoluteness by Lee. But don't be mistaken, hence you think I am referring to Lee Jeans with all that blueness and the sheepness running down the roads at Wes and Jess. Ohhhh nooooo you don't Gammy. Grant Lee reminds me of the good old days...Wouldn't you just love to see Gammi, Yanni, and Mommy back together again? With all their combos of newnessless plus freshety...Good old days Pierre, Good old day! Get this album for some newness in your life!

  • Oh my this is top rate masterfulness at it mastery!!
    author: Jeffrey Janeyman J Lo

Now let me tell you a little itty bitty story bout the way this music makes me feel...It made me itch at first and then tingle up and down. Now I set my clock to 5:44 AM every morning to get up and listen to Grant Lee. I used to get up at 5:55AM but because of Grant Lee I get up 11 minutes earlier. My granmommy once said, "one day something will cause you to get up 11 minutes earlier and it will be fantabulous!" Oh granmommy you were prophetic!! Thanks to Grant Lee it all has come true and I now appreciate the music even more when it is a little darker. Grab this album and see what it does for you!!

  • This album is rocking round my clock!
author: moe from another message board

This album is great and chris, you are going to love it too! I am the official music critic of another board whose name I will not mention. People over there respect my highly intelligent posts along with my musical tastes. They know to ask me for great music. Therefore, I recommend you get this album immediately. It made me so happy...I think that this album will go down as my all time favorite. I am only a young kid of 20 but I know more music than anyone I have ever met. I am destined for fame as is Grant Lee. Fantastically, great and wonderful mix of music here....You best go get this album now or I will hunt you down!

  • I can't believe my juniping jumpies!!!
author: O Joe Jane Juniper Junehouser

One sunny June day I first heard this music and Jimmy let me tell you it made my July! Oh my heavens was it some July when I first knew about Grant Lee. Never before have my July's had such fiery fantastic fireworks that are called Grant Lee music. So you can tell your cousin Crimble Crumble that I am thankful of his July recommendation. If it wasn't for new music Monday when I first heard Grant Lee, who in the US of A knows where my crazy tastes in music would be headed. But I got grouded by Grant Lee. Thank my lucky stars(and Crimble Crumble) for musical taste that has integrity such as Grant Lee. Ohhhh Yeah Babe!!!

  • This is utterly amazing!
    author: Crimble Crumble

This is Crimble Crumble reporting for a great new album! You are not going to believe your ears when you hear this. Your ears probably will say, "Are we actually hearing this" Now this album ranks right up there with all my favorites and that is saying something because I KNOW music...from Phish to Grateful Dead, I have been around the block! Again this is Crimble Crumble saying: Use your next paycheck wisely and BUY this album!!

  • A great album!
    author: Mr. Pinky

It made me happy, so very happy, I am now happy to be listening to this album over and over again. You better buy this album now.

  • Pure unadulterated liberty from unsociable crap that abounds!
author: Tinky Tom Timothy and John

I got so nutty when I first heard this album so I went out to the field and shucked a few acres of corn...Can't believe this album maybe me do it because I really hate to shuck corn. My mom once said, "I probably will never see Tinky Tom Timothy and John shuck corn again!" But here I am shucking corn and it is all thanks to this album. Maybe I should give it to my brother who hates to rotatile the fields at midnight!

  • Hrmm....what's all the fuzz about?
author: Just A Danish Glp Music Lover

I'll give a star for the voice, one for the production and one for the songs - which is not at all his best work to come. The songs are small pieces of stipped down mellow folksongs, which I love, but I need them to be more melodic and more caracteristic. They don't stick out and you tend to hear the cd like background music without focusing on the individual song. Sorry guys...I know you love it - I do too, in my on way, but can't wait for future GLP albums...

  • Sometimes this leaves you too far from reality...
    author: Roda

GLP is a mesmeric guy, and this CD grooves your soul and steals your body to a place in the clouds, then it turns you inside out and gobbles away at your last breath. Simply put, it's not hard to get high from this. Waiting for more.

  • Wonderful
    author: Niffer

I can't believe that I have missed GLB all these years. I heard some of the older music on the new TV series Withchblade on TNT this year, rushed out and bought a couple of the CD's including this one, and so far everything that I have heard I have absolutely loved. I hope GLB is around for many years to come. I am definitely hooked! 9/2001

  • Reminds me of Lenin...

    Beautiful!

  • Great music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    author: Jessica

I first heard Grant's music on the Gilmore Girls show. Gilmore Girls is my favorite show, though that has nothing to do with the fact on why I love his music. The first second I heard his music breafly on the show i loved it. And i took his name down when they showed a copy of his cd at the end the Gilmore Girls. And now i have his music and Ilove it all. Good Luck!!!!!!!

  • positive review of ladies love oracle
    author: Peterjh

Achingly good, I just had to have it, and it didn't disappoint! I love the 'stripped to the bare bones' sound...gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!

  • Great but short
    author: Tony May

Album very chilled but just as soon as it gets you on its wavelength it is over - not right. Definitely recommend it, some songs sad, some melancholy but all beautiful.

  • Intimate and enchanting. A very special album.
    author: Ewan

A welcome return to form from Grant. It seems that in this day and age of over produced commercial music, lo-fi recordings like this and others are needed more than ever. Also, it puts the songs in focus rather than the image of the artist. Thank you for some great music and please stay indie.

  • his best work
    author: Ben Dahlman

i'm not really much of a grant lee buffalo fan, but this disc is really good.

  • Incredible
    author: Pepper Mcgowan/inky Midnight Music

I found this by accident on CDBABY and it caught my eye because I liked both the title and I'm a fan of Grant's earlier stuff with GLB. Wow. This is the BEST CD I purchased last year, hands down. Pieces of it have made it onto mix tapes for friends who ended up ordering it here. I also find myself covering two of the songs regularly in my own sets. This is gorgeous!

  • The real deal. Enchanting melodies and lyrically superb
    author: Nick Zane

Very warm cd. Can put this in and relax reading a book or just to chill with. This would be a perfect cd for a coffee house. But this cd does not lack power or drive, the lyrics are delivered with beauty and conviction. Reminds of what probably John Lennon would sound like if he were alive putting out a cd today. Great melodies and great production, especially for being recorded in 3 days.

  • nice shit g.l.p.!!!
    author: Tiggs

a crazy silly fresh disc of pure ass-slappin' greatness!! Buy this CD or Curly-G is cummin to hunt you down!

  • Great.
    author: Charley

Amazing cd. Please come to DC to perform sometime.

  • Brilliant, super, magic, back on top.
    author: Storm Denmark

Nine great melodic songs filled with passion. It is a heavenly CD... The best record this year. Grant Lee Phillips is back on top. Please give us more music.

  • Yes
    author: Gus

I'm keeping it short and sweet. Grant Lee is a true bard!

  • A warm and beautifull delight!
    author: Lewis Phillips

When I recieved the news that Grant Lee Buffalo has dispanded I was afraid that Grants songs may change considerably as the other components that made the songs so special had gone, this album proved me wrong. Put simply, it's beautifull the songs are warm, gracefull and full of wonderfull imagery. Grants voice sounds better than ever and the stripped down sound is a refreshing change to todays modern chart music which is often too slick and over-produced. If you have the money, please buy it and share in the delight.

  • Lennon-esqe. Beautiful. swaying. Floatyarms. Much Love.
    author: Jme

I was dissappointed in the cardboard sleeve packaging and i am going to get a real cd case for it because the cd keeps sliding out onto the floor. But the music is beautiful...Lennon-esqe in spots...I found myself swaying...feeling very peaceful. Tough to sell to the zombies in this Mtv day, but anyone with a soul will feel it and love it.

  • A sign of more to come
    author: Peter Pereira

How does this guy do it? He's not well known here in England but on the strength of these 9 melodies he deserves to be. There aren't many artists out there that can deliver what Grant has done with both Buffalo and this CD. I hope it's a sign of more to come.

  • A MASTERPIECE (pure genius)
    author: Ian

Forget it only has 9 tracks & is only 31 minutes long. If you haven't got this CD then you should have. This is worth paying $30.00 for. Grant lee takes us through a angelic performance of raw, melodic & atmospheric songs that leave you feeling contented & heavenly. Can't wait for the tour.

  • Flat on my back floating away, simply magic!
    author: Kenneth Andersen

I usually listen to Ladies' Love Oracle when I'm about to sleep, but I never can because I lie there listening to the lyrics and float away. Once is never enough, it's just too short, thank god for repeat technology. This is amazing stuff, I'm all for it and everyone will be - if they listen to it.

  • Grant Lee is God!
    author: Irma Kaye

Ah...Grant Lee, that emotive, smoky voice, the amazing lyrics. Check out "Folding," has to be one of the best breakup songs ever written. Sniff, sniff. As usual, Grant Lee takes us on a journey through history, love, loss and redemption. If you go on this journey with your eyes and ears open, you might come back changed a little....

  • Best Solo Album I Have Ever Heard!
    author: Ryan

Great from start to finish. Grant Lee Phillips' way of songwriting is amazing. His creativity and passion fuse together for an unbelievable record. Fantastic.

  • Grant Lee Phillips Never Disappoints
    author: John Parker

Since purchasing Grant Lee Phillips' new disc, "Ladies' Love Oracle", it has constantly stayed in the CD player of my car. It's amazing how compelling a self produced project can be...this disc can stand up head-to-head with any of the Grant Lee Buffalo releases of days past...and could kick the @$$ of anything playing on the airwaves today. Sweet.

  • Intelligent, sensitive songwriting...few compare...
    author: Djembe

Ladies' Love Oracle is the sweetest collection of songs. I'm in awe. More, please.

  • Dreamy..
    author: Jeppe Salvesen

As a long time Grant Lee Buffalo fan, I'm partial to this record. Its quiet honesty and directness is perfect for dreamy moods and reflection. Some of the songs may be a bit anonymous, but the general mood of this record just brings you down after a long day's stress in the most gentle, soothing way. Keep 'em coming, Grant!

  • Musical Bliss
    author: Christian G

Grant-Lee Phillips truly blew me away with this CD and I would highly recommended it to pretty much everyone. I know that's quite a broad brush, but this CD is filled with musical gems.

  • Hair raising
    author: Laurence Arnold; Spydaradio.co.uk

The voice that makes all the hairs on your arms and neck raise is back. This time stripped down, which adds to the beauty. Melodic and haunting, warm and chilling, stark and expansive, soothing and emotional. It's all there. You don't need any more. Buy.

  • Listening is like being wrapped up in Golden Cotton Wool
    author: Trevor

It's incredible to think that this guy has produced 4 of the landmark albums of the 90s through Grant Lee Buffalo. Now, finally his work is there to judge on it's own and It really does stand up alongside his previous body of work. In some ways it's better than anything he could have achieved with GLB. It's more mature, reflective and in many ways the sparse, pared-down orchestration really drive home the music's message. If he could write and deliver one of these every week, I, for one would buy it.

  • Grant, you are amazing.
    author: Scott Boylan

Glad to see that everyone agrees about "Ladies Love Oracle" - I think it is wonderful. I hope GLP continues to make music this broad, beautiful, and original! Thank you, Grant, for your timeless additions to music's history - and please come perform in Denver!

  • Keepin' it real; keepin' it simple. Keepin' it really simple.
    author: Ross Nipson

Simply Amazing... Hearing that it would just be Grant and his guitar, I didn't think that it would be that great. Then I heard "Flamin Shoe" after a few songs in and it blew my mind. Even though it isn't as amazing as when he had Joey and Paul with him, it's pretty damn good. "Squint" takes a new direction in sound for him and does it succesfully well. This album is highly recomended and the live show is the most recomended one-man show on earth (according to Nipson). Keep on keepin' on

  • Jackson Browne?
    author: Juan

I remember Jackson Browne in the 70's....thank you for taking me back there.

  • Fantastic record. Memorable to say the least!
    author: Cbonney

The CD is moody, but in the best way. the presence is amazing and his voice, of course, makes it all more than worth while. It's worth the price....

  • A beautiful moody album!!
    author: Marc

Ladies Love Oracle is a beautifully crafted album that captures the raw element of Grant Lee Phillips. The only disappointing part of this album is the fact that it has only 9 songs. Is this a demo or an album? Anyway, it is still a, got have it album, for any Grant Lee Buffalo or Grant Lee Phillips fan. Oh, and I loved the birthday show he did at the Largo in Los Angeles.

  • Soon to become a "worn out favorite."
    author: Dr. Damon West

You know how you have specific music for certain moods or occasions? This extraordinary piece of work has replaced several of my favorites. Close second, GLB-Jubilee (of course).

  • I sing the songs aloud to people in elevators and public restrooms
    author: Maureen

I ordered it from you guys about a month ago, and I've played it, like, twice a day every day since then. I've recommended it to my friends, family, and strangers on the street. I sing the songs aloud to people in elevators and public restrooms. I love it!

  • Super Sweet Ear Candy
    author: Heath Hamilton

Your ears will thank you for buying this CD. The whole album is a mellow masterpiece, and that's putting it ever so lightly. All the songs are great, with the ones that stick out in my mind being Squint, Dont Look Down, Lonesome Serenade and St. Expedite. You have to wonder if Grant wrote St. Expedite the morning after he woke up and Marie Laveau was gone (ala Dixie Drug Store).. Listening to Squint is pretty cool. The melody makes you feel as though you are climbing a ladder only to fall off one you reach the top, and then you start back up. Grant accents this feeling with lyrics like "falling back to earth" in just the right places. Don't Look Down has an acoustic Candy Store Rock (Led Zeppelin) feel. But you can't just listen to one song. You've gotta take this one as a whole.. Alot of the vocals are that classic blend of Grant's beautiful upper end whisper voice (he somewhat forgoes his beritone) and John Lennon. Familiar hooks on harmonica, guitar and honky tonk piano further solidify what was already clear: Grant Lee never needed the Buffalo.

  • round and round it goes...
    author: Nessa Faye

never in my life has one piece of music been played so constantly into my ears, hummed so lovingly on my lips, and lay so heavily on my brain... if you know grant lee from his buffalo days, you've already been hypnotized with his blessed voice, lyrics, and melodies... "ladies' love oracle" only brings you in deeper... his songs are stories of love, heartache, nostalgia, destiny and fate; this is music that is more than mildowed pianos and breathtaking falsettos... it touches so many truths about life, and brings you back to a purer sense of yourself... listen to this with the window open, the breeze drifting in, laying in bed huddled against your lover... or (even better) the memory of your lover....

  • Grant is Amazing
    author: Paul

Buy it now...this CD is Grant Lee in a mellow frame of mind. Grant is truly the most UNDERRATED musician I can think of...do yourself a favor and pick up this CD today.

  • a taste of things to come
    author: Jed

Grant is as strong and hauntingly melodic as ever, and this album is the proof. "Ladies Love Oracle" is short, sweet, beautiful, and certainly just a glimpse of what is to come from this phenomenal singer/songwriter. One listen sweeps you away to a very soothing and lovely place.

  • Strong - as - usual performance
    author: Rob

Grant Lee has done it again. His songwriting cuts to the core of emotion and his melodies are truly "heavenly".. A must have for even the most casual GLB fan, and a should have for every fan of great singer songwriters.

  • guitar, piano, grant vocals and silent, dark backdrop
    author: K. Michael Fales

Classic Grant! The album has the feel that GLB b-sides have, without the full band sound. It's much more personal than anything I've heard from GLB, and the quiet background of the basement gives it the feeling of a truth or dare game that didn't turn into sex, but ended at 8am with secrets being told without fear of judgement.

  • Soothing, mellow folk goodness
    author: Adrian

While the production is low key (this is the intention of the recording), most of the songs come through brilliantly. The only exception is "Flamin' Shoe," which could be one of Grant's CLASSICS given the vocals were higher in the mix and the performance had as much energy as it has been done live. Nevertheless, this song is still quite good. Overall, it's a perfect record to just sit back and enjoy. Biggest complaint: 31 minutes in length, 9 songs for a list price of $17.94 and $13.99 in the only place selling it online? Harsh.

  • Sweet Potato Pie, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!
    author: Liam

I'll keep this sweet, cause Grant does it all. If you know Grant Lee Biffalo, why are reading this? Fuckin' order it already, and if you don't....he is like that musician that the cool kid down the street is obsessed with and nobody knows about.....and now you have a chance....BUY IT!! IT RULES!!!...if you want a taste go to www.grantleephillips.com and then click on Links and then on the WKRZ radio link and then click on grant lee phillips. WOW!
