ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes

Grant-Lee Phillips is a veritable one-man army, playing every instrument on Mobilize, which he also co-produced with Carmen Rizzo.

Two years since dissolving the critically lauded Grant Lee Buffalo, Phillips launches his solo career with an engaging, deeply passionate album.

The set opens with "See America," a gentle ballad reminiscent of David Bowie's "Space Oddity," here with Bowie's tragic spaceman voyaging in a yellow New York taxi cab.

Phillips constructs characters with humor and sensitivity, such as the exhausted journalist on "We All Get a Taste" and the criminal lovers of the majestic "Love's a Mystery." "Like a Lover" is a pained revelation of the vulnerability love brings, and the ache is soulfully crooned.

Conversely, Phillips projects sheer joy on "Spring Released" and "Beautiful Dreamers." At the brink of a new stage in Phillips' career, Mobilize is a classic all his own.

CD Baby

A big passionate, triumphant pop album from the genius behind Grant Lee Buffalo. THIS IS A HIT RECORD - make no mistake. It's a total classic from beginning to end. Every song is pure perfection. Personally, I think it's better than anything he ever did with Grant Lee Buffalo. It'll bring a tear to your eye, longing for days past when radio played good music instead of Pepsi music.

more great song writing with brilliant orchestration
the songs are great. the orchestration, as always, is captivating. i can't stop listening to it. however, i wish real drums were used. the total absence of real percussion tends to detract from the antique/ rustic beauty of grant-lee's style. not enough to ruin it though.

Don Nelson

A must-hear album for true music lovers.
Grant-Lee Phillips makes a triumpant return as a solo artist! This album is not only reminiscent of his acclaimed work with Grant-Lee Buffalo, but it also exibits a fresh new sound as well. One of the album highlights being the radio-worthy pop of the song "Spring Released". Mainstream is missing out on the work of a great artist, but I'm glad that I discovered this jewel for myself. I've recommended it to others ten times over. It's wonderful.

interesting sound....provokes wide array of feelings.... lazily drowning
The unique sound and feel of each song vary widley and provoke an expansive range of emotions.... mobilize gets me feeling i should stand up and do something huge and life altering, while lazily drowning creates such a mellowing experience my pulse actually slows down!

Mobilize
There are few artists that can put me into a dream like state but Grant Lee Phillips is one of them! Not only a great album but a fantastic artist with a magnificent voice also.

Statement of Faith music

The golden brush strokes of innovative production
Music in general, over the last few years has become a showcase for new technology and very nominal musical vision and ability. Grants musical productions help breathe life back into a wonderfully mysterious musical style, Pop Music. His music makes you feel good, and puts a smile on your face. Grant-Lee phillips is a great musical experience.

first heard him on Witchbalde---Mobilize not disappointingat all!!
First heard his voice on "Witchblade" and fell in love. Knew I wouldn't be disappointed. Mobilize is pure raw music. Talent at its best.

I bought this album initially based upon Sadness Soot and Spring Released. Upon hearing the full album, I was wholly satisfied with my decision. Although all the songs stand on their own, pleasing in their own rights, as it turns out, the album is more satisfying in its entirety. I find the fuller production on this record in particular, in contrast to his 2004 release, as well as his previous release, to be a welcome departure. I don't believe, however, that everyone should immediately run out and buy it, as I've read other reviewers rave. Opinion is just that- everyone has their own. Overall I think the songs envoke a wistful and/or positive feeling. Try downloading several tracks, and if you enjoy them, you shouldn't be disappointed by the record.
