notes
Grant-Lee Phillips is a veritable one-man army, playing every instrument on Mobilize, which he also co-produced with Carmen Rizzo.
Two years since dissolving the critically lauded Grant Lee Buffalo, Phillips launches his solo career with an engaging, deeply passionate album.
The set opens with "See America," a gentle ballad reminiscent of David Bowie's "Space Oddity," here with Bowie's tragic spaceman voyaging in a yellow New York taxi cab.
Phillips constructs characters with humor and sensitivity, such as the exhausted journalist on "We All Get a Taste" and the criminal lovers of the majestic "Love's a Mystery." "Like a Lover" is a pained revelation of the vulnerability love brings, and the ache is soulfully crooned.
Conversely, Phillips projects sheer joy on "Spring Released" and "Beautiful Dreamers." At the brink of a new stage in Phillips' career, Mobilize is a classic all his own.

Great CD
author: DJ Eric MThe cd has some great opening and ending tracks. The middle kinda takes some getting use to but it's a great cd. I always listen to it when I'm doing my homework or studying.

I feel so good,in China, you could get the cd hardly.but it is different from rock style, good, really, esp. see America.
Awespendous! Exnificent! Ridiculicious!
author: Christof WhitemanYou hit play on your cd player and hear the sweet sounds of the first track, See America, and this is when you know that buying this cd was a wise decision. Not to downplay any of the other delicious songs, but the goosebumps that wash over you while listening to See America is worth the money alone. You keep listening to the tracks to follow and you feel moved by Humankind, you try to sing along with Love's a Mystery despite not yet knowing the lyrics, you let Lazily Drowning fill you with odd comfort and a smile of pure happiness crosses your face when the sounds of Beautiful Dreamers reaches your ears. And from the first second of See America to the last second of April Chimes, you not only listen to amazing music, but you take part in an experience hosted by a voice so soft you could sleep on. A voice that belongs to Grant-Lee Phillips.
Mobilize is terrific
author: MichaelI only recently discovered the music of Grant Lee Phillips (both solo and Buffalo works. How I missed him all these years I don't know.) Anyway, this album is great!
Grant is fabulous, but we already knew that. Didn't we?
author: SIWith the right promotion this cd could be extremely commercial and I'm not just saying that. Mobilize the song has a spooky sci-fi feeling to it. Its just so tight. Overall tight. Visit me at www.cdbaby.com/si2 . Peace....SI

A big passionate, triumphant pop album from the genius behind Grant Lee Buffalo. THIS IS A HIT RECORD - make no mistake. It's a total classic from beginning to end. Every song is pure perfection. Personally, I think it's better than anything he ever did with Grant Lee Buffalo. It'll bring a tear to your eye, longing for days past when radio played good music instead of Pepsi music.

I bought this album initially based upon Sadness Soot and Spring Released. Upon hearing the full album, I was wholly satisfied with my decision. Although all the songs stand on their own, pleasing in their own rights, as it turns out, the album is more satisfying in its entirety. I find the fuller production on this record in particular, in contrast to his 2004 release, as well as his previous release, to be a welcome departure. I don't believe, however, that everyone should immediately run out and buy it, as I've read other reviewers rave. Opinion is just that- everyone has their own. Overall I think the songs envoke a wistful and/or positive feeling. Try downloading several tracks, and if you enjoy them, you shouldn't be disappointed by the record.
We came, we heard, we liked it.
author: Marlon and MeWe came, we heard, we liked it. Keep up the good work. Marlon & Me.
interesting sound....provokes wide array of feelings.... lazily drowning
author: GAdawgThe unique sound and feel of each song vary widley and provoke an expansive range of emotions.... mobilize gets me feeling i should stand up and do something huge and life altering, while lazily drowning creates such a mellowing experience my pulse actually slows down!
An angel from another galaxy...
author: DJ HYJYNXGrant-Lee is nothing short of a supernatural phenomenon. See the Webster's definition: "2 plural phenomena a : an object or aspect known through the senses rather than by thought or intuition b : a temporal or spatiotemporal object of sensory experience as distinguished from a noumenon c : a fact or event of scientific interest susceptible of scientific description and explanation 3 a : a rare or significant fact or event b plural phenomenons : an exceptional, unusual, or abnormal person, thing, or occurrence" This album touches on all the beautiful colors that Grant-Lee uses to paint his stories of human experience. There is joy, sadness, meditation, beauty, and everything in between. I really enjoy this new era of his music, it is more free and complex and genre-crossing than the previous work in GLB, which I already love more than life. Sing along with these songs, it will make you feel alive and grateful for all the beautiful gifts the world has to offer. Thank you, Grant-Lee. I hope that you continue to make music all your days, and we will be along with you on that journey. What a blessing! And thank you, universe, for Grant-Lee. You broke the mold with this kid. Please take care of him and watch over them as they tour the globe sharing their gifts with everyone.
Grant-Lee Phillips Can Kick the Crap Out of John Mayer
author: AdamMobilize is an album with varying harmonies, melodies and feeling. Phillips delivers an entire album that does not even sound like itself, but remains cohesive throughout. A great dilemma facing our world is the watering-down of our balladeers. John Mayer, Dave Matthews et al, who all sound just like each other will be brushed aside should Grant-Lee Phillips enter the realm of mainstream and join truly great balladeers like Ryan Adams, Conor Oberst and Damien Rice. Don't listen to crap, buy this album. Now.
Simply one of THE best Albums I've heard in a long time
author: musicfan83absolutely amazing CD. EVery song is great. MOBILIZE is my favorite song on the album.

Surprisingly Great!
author: Jonathan GreenI just listened out of curiousity, but I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the music and creativity. This a good CD. This guy can really sing and express different emotions.

Nice Surprise! Great Stuff!
author: RandyI'm new to Grant Lee, and bought it based on the reviews (which were pretty stellar). I was not disappointed! It's a great pop record, yet has a lot of depth for repeated listening. Recommended for people with eclectic taste, and appreciation for excellent pop!
The golden brush strokes of innovative production
author: Statement of Faith musicMusic in general, over the last few years has become a showcase for new technology and very nominal musical vision and ability. Grants musical productions help breathe life back into a wonderfully mysterious musical style, Pop Music. His music makes you feel good, and puts a smile on your face. Grant-Lee phillips is a great musical experience.
The return of the Lone Star
author: BoxphetIf there were any doubts as to where the song writing skills layed in Grant Lee Buffallo, they will dissappear after a couple of listenings to this brilliant album by Grant Lee-Phillips. Layed back, matured and in a lyrical universe, encapturing those things still valuable enough to praise in the U.S. A new classic, bringing severeal new "fuzzys" that deserves the ear of a larger audience. We want more Grant Lee.
A diabolically brilliant piece of work, it seems
author: Jonathan DalyA diabolically brilliant piece of work, it seems as though Mr. Phillips is determined to make himself a star. His freshman outing was good, but not great (not like I'm one to talk - watch my first piece to see what I'm talking about). With melodies that hark back to no one, Grant-Lee Phillips creates a sound thats all his own. His lyrics are strong yet not overbearing, and do not take away from what I feel are his greatest strengths - his voice and his melodies. Once he hits the campus airwaves, I expect big things so if you are the kind of person who likes to be able to say "I knew them before they were big", then grab this CD as fast as you can.
Songs that transend you to a mystical place, but you hear evry word.
author: Maria Lee Carta(Scruchina Records Inc.)When you hear Grant Lee Philips you really hear him.You hear the music and wonderful words;that transend you to a mystical place where you can draw yourown conclusions about the lyrics.I like lyrics that tell you more than one story at a time;(Dylan was always great at that) and so is Grant Lee Philips.Hoo-Ray;its about time.Maria Lee Carta-singer/songwritter
I saw him playing and I thought: Revelation!
author: Wolfgang MillendorferTo be true, I didn't know "mobilize" before I heard Grant Lee in Vienna - but I knew, I loved, I lived Grant Lee Buffalo. And I lived it through again and again, when I saw Grant Lee perform. I resumed: To go to this concert was the best thing I did in the year 2002, probably the best I did in the past three or five years. Now I have my one and only hero! I saw Grant Lee, I heard Grant Lee - and I thought about quitting my job the next day, going to Oslo, where his next gig should be and do anything - but none of the things I did before... Now: I'm sitting here - at my job and doing the same things as before - but I don't mind. 'Cause inside of me there's something growing, even more than before. Grant Lee - we'll meet again.
Very nice record, exellent tunes, strange production
author: Major TomMobilize has an exellent compilation of songs and the tunes have both intense and beautiful melodies. The text are just as spaced, but still serious as with GLB and no matter how you listen to this record, it will fit in one way or anoter. The production with the programmed drums still made me wish for regular drums.
first heard him on Witchbalde---Mobilize not disappointingat all!!
author: Daphne GodwinFirst heard his voice on "Witchblade" and fell in love. Knew I wouldn't be disappointed. Mobilize is pure raw music. Talent at its best.
A must-hear album for true music lovers.
author: Don NelsonGrant-Lee Phillips makes a triumpant return as a solo artist! This album is not only reminiscent of his acclaimed work with Grant-Lee Buffalo, but it also exibits a fresh new sound as well. One of the album highlights being the radio-worthy pop of the song "Spring Released". Mainstream is missing out on the work of a great artist, but I'm glad that I discovered this jewel for myself. I've recommended it to others ten times over. It's wonderful.
Inspired and original, worth a listen or two or three.
author: Ray LawThe work on this cd has a way of sneaking up on you. As I listened to the tracks, I heard a common thread but was still not convinced that it was saying anything. It was only until I heard "Beautiful Dreamers" that I saw the full picture and began to understand what "Mobilize was all about. Years ago I really liked a band called E.L.O.(Electric light Orchestra.) They were one of the most inovative, creative bands around at the time. Grant Lee-Philips comes very close to bringing back a remnant of E.L.O. with Mobilize. Support this artist and his music.
The Best Album of 2001....Period.
author: Justin ConnorWhy has America, and the rest of the world for that matter, not latched on to this brilliant, beautiful musician with his swooning, velvety voice, and introspective lyrics. I think 'Beautiful Dreamers' is one of the most refreshing songs I've heard in a long time....His departure to a more techno influence, while still retaning his classic, unique rock-ish sound is inspiring. I've told everyone I know to buy this CD...I can't wait for what comes next...Thanks Grant...keep 'em comin!
Among the very best of 2001
author: Sense Music Zine"Mobilize" could have been Grant Lee Buffalo's fifth album - and their best. Phillips' songwriting charisma is displayed here at its best resulting in a handful of haunting melodies, enhanced with an irresistible "mechanical engineering" groovy background. The gentle psychedelic tones of his voice will touch everyone's heart. A real treasure.
The singer-songwriter at his troubadour best
author: Jason LeeA true lesson in pure lyrical songwriting, coupled with naked, honest vocal delivery from the most intruiging troubadour in modern music today. Truly, truly a classic.
- author: Thomas Lejon (the Swede)
Of course it`s greate....He cant do anything boring not with that voice, and the lyrics WOW. Imagen to see him with Nick Cave (christ on a motor bike) :)
more great song writing with brilliant orchestration
author: Lawrence Demarcothe songs are great. the orchestration, as always, is captivating. i can't stop listening to it. however, i wish real drums were used. the total absence of real percussion tends to detract from the antique/ rustic beauty of grant-lee's style. not enough to ruin it though.
Greatest ever!!!
author: AndyDo not think, do not see, just listen. I think it´s enough if you just listen to "See America" and "Lazily Drowning". This album is a composition of perfect production and wonderful melodic guitar sounds. All this together creates a euphoric harmony and a pleasure that i haven´t felt for a long time!!!
Beautiful folk pop rock
author: Marc HerronGrant Lee Phillips continues on a journey like the pide piper stringing us listeners along on a heartfelt and sincere ride that keeps our hearts jubilant and our minds contemplating. From, See America, the first single off the record, to the title track, mobilize, and the ballad, Sleepless Lake, Phillips makes us feel languid and heartbroken and then hopeful and energized. He is a true master of songwriting who is still growing and changing while keeping his message honest.
Great album !!!
author: YannickFirst class album as it appears. I'll have to buy it when I can !!! Although Grant Lee Buffalo had some truly great songs on their albums (such as Fuzzy and Stars n'stripes) they often sounded arrogant, a tad overproduced and even frankly boring on them. However I truly love the sincere, low-profile approach that GLP has now, it really sounds more honest, more vulnerable and also, to me, much more moving and exciting. This is really the kind of music that DOES IT... "Homemade" music is so much better than stadium rock, however melodic ! Keep up the good work and things will work out great for you again -- I'm sure of that!
This works
author: Tirk WilderGrant Lee knocks his groove dead in the dirt. If ethereal but meaningful mood-enhancing strains appeal to you, you can't miss here. A breath of finely filtered air...
