The Grass Less Traveled was formed in 2002, and is a mixture of traditional and contemporary bluegrass along with a dash of country. Let’s just say they are not your father’s bluegrass band. Mike Gibson sings lead vocal and plays the doghouse bass. Tony Pires plays the mandolin and sings harmony. Doug Carlton sings harmony and plays the flatop and resonator guitars. Steve Hall drives the band with his hot banjo playing. Band members refer to Steve as The Machine because of his precision playing and hot licks.

The CD’s title cut, “Leaving Pikes County,” is a smooth bluegrass-country sad song that is destined to be this groups first hit. Written by Mike Gibson and Doug Carlton, this tale of love lost is a contemporary classic. GLT’s versions of “Mama Tried” and “Dim Lights,” are done the GLT’s own unique style. Vassar Clement’s “Lonesome Fiddle Blues” Bill Monroe’s “Tennessee Blues” showcase the group’s instrumental talent and highlight their ability to play in both traditional and contemporary styles. GLT’s haunting version of the Lefty Frizell classic “Long Black Veil” leaves you wanting to hear more from this great group. We highly recommend this album to anyone who loves traditional or contemporary bluegrass, classic country, or even folk music. You will not be disappointed!
