An acoustic band with bluegrass influences, pushing the boundaries and creating a new sound of their own. This is the bands self produced debut album.

notes

Traditional acoustic music in America has a rich past, one that has crossed geographic and cultural boundaries. In the case of these young musicians, this past has not only crossed oceans but also bridged generations.
With lineages (and accents) that defy expectation, this confluence of gifted musicians is making a name for itself and drawing critical acclaim in traditional music circles and beyond. From south of the equator, Australia has graciously lent the duo of Carol Young and Kym Warner while Great Britain has offered the talents of Eamon McLoughlin.
Young is a songbird whose diminutive stature provides a delightful diversion that belies her award-winning vocals and solid bass work that bookend the talents of her band mates.
Warner, a four-time winner of the prestigious Australian National Bluegrass Mandolin Championships, trades heartfelt vocals with blazing mandolin runs that erase the years between now and the time you first heard Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys.
As the lone Brit in the project, McLoughlin tops off this bountiful union with fiddle playing that easily transitions between tasty and powerful while adding vocal complement to the group's evocative harmonies.
While they may be expatriates to their homelands, their love and reverence for the music they play has made them the adopted sons and daughters to fans of traditional acoustic music - and even those who didn't know they liked traditional music.
Luckily for music lovers everywhere, this unlikely fusion of young talent has roots that run deep.

Just a great debut CD. The vocals are fresh and the instrumentals are really, really good. I am a fan! Here is hoping for more great music from this trio in the future! I first heard the Greencards playing live in Michael Nesmith's Video Ranch in 2007. Instant fan!

Thanks CD baby. I got the CD in a hurry, and just as I ordered it! I have had the pleasure to meet Carol and the guys of the Greencards at a small gig in Northern VA, ast Jammin Java. I loved their music and had to buy their latest album, "Veridian." It was so wonderful, especially the very poignant "All the Way From Italy," about their parents' flight from Italy to escape the Nazis, that I got their earlier album, "Weather and Water." A couple of the cuts on that album reminded me so much of my country and bluegrass roots in Tennessee, that I openly wept (not easy for me to say as a 51-year-old adult). So you might imagine that I had to recently buy "Movin' On." I was a little surprised by some of the cuts in that album being more traditional, Nashville-style country tunes, almost honky-tonk; but then I realized that they do record in Nashville, and must have let a little of my old stomping grounds rub off on them. I must say, however, that, no matter how different their albums may be, they all are excellent works of art. The guys are so tight with their harmonies, and their instrumental talents are phenomenal. Additionally, "Movin' On" is just like their other albums in that they are never over-produced. Always just the right ratio of vocals to instruments, and all the other production characteristics are superb. If you haven't purchased either "Weather and Water," or "Movin' On," I would highly recommend them. You will see why they have had records topping the bluegrass charts! So, Carol, once again, I must say. I love the music that you and the guys make, and look forward to to the next one. Maybe I get to see you ast the Birchmere.

  • WHAT GREAT MUSIC!!
    author: Suzanne Whitaker

I received my CD very quickly. Thank you, CDBaby! I now have all three of the Greencards' CD's and look forward to their next one. They really are incredible! I think my favorite on "Movin' On" is the instrumental "Leonardo's Ride" but I also like "Love's A Word I Never Throw Around". Carol's voice is so unique and beautiful! And she can really play that bass!!

  • I Love the music of these three great artist~!
    author: Cliff Dunn

I've been around them until the move from Austin, Texas. I've seen them play just to children and some of the many clubs around the Austin area, and of course the Austin City Limits Festival. If Nashville will let them keep their style and sound, they will be remembered 100 years from now as one of the greatest. These three are perfect together~! BTW>Carol, if you read this " Cyber-Hugs to you"... Cliff Dunn>Austin, Texas

  • Great band, great sound, great disc!
    author: Dave R

I found The Greencards by word-of-mouth and samped a few of their songs from a friend. I instantly loved their unique sound and purchased the album. I grew up with folk music and this was a like an updated of an old favorite, sent some samples to my father who also purchased the Greencards albums. I highly reccommend The Greencards. The music is rich and interesting while maintaining the simplicity of un-syth-hip-pop-rap arrangements. It's great to put on as background to a gathering or reading or you can listen intently for the subtlties. Buy it!

  • Fabulous!! I loved this one as much as Weather and Water!
    author: Justina Batchelor

I had to buy this first CD after seeing The Greencards in Knoxvile, TN and listening to their new cd, Weather and Water. I've really enjoyed Movin' On as well. My favorite song is Like a Freeway. I remembered it from the concert and I just love, love it! I've played it for all my friends and they all love it too! Keep up the great music!! Justina Batchleor Junior at Indiana University

    author: Blake Rochelle

Saw the band in Birmingham with Robert Earl Keen and knew I had to have their cd. It didn't disappoint. Great musicians and Carol's singing is great...as is the guys! All in all, a great album.

  • Loved the CD.
    author: Jim

The CD maintains high quality and variety of songs throughout, to the extent that it became our Christmas gift to family this year. It recalled their performance at McGonigle's Mucky Duck, where we first became fans. We definitely recommend both CD and any live performance that they offer.

  • Brilliance at its best
    author: Chris

Movin On is beautifully written, performed and produced with masterfull class A musicianship throughout. It is so diverse, and has something for everyone. For me it has everything, and I just can't seem to get enough. So go on, treat yourself, and if you are not currently a fan of this genre of music, just give this album a listen and be prepared to be converted.

  • Aussies sure can do bluegrass!
    author: Murray (Australia)

I stumbled on the Greencards in January at the Tamworth Country Music Festival - and boy can they play! I've had "Life's a Freeway" in my head for months now! Every song on this CD is worth listening to. The fiddle work is not overpowering, and complements the solid bass. The mandolin is the icing on the cake, providing a finesse to each track. Two Aussies and a Brit - who says we can't play bluegrass!

  • Beautiful lyrics, masterful mandolin, fiddle, bass, and wonderful voices!
    author: Susan Corey-McAlpine

We heard The Greencards at the Strawberry Music Festival in Fall, 2004 (Camp Mather, Yosemite, California)-- phenomenal fiddle and mandolin as well as honeyed voices. I was astonished to find that Movin' On is the Greencards' first, as it is so polished and more varied in scope than any other trio we've ever heard. I generally play it at least once a day and especially love "Movin' On", "Love's A Word I Never Throw Around", and "Leonardo's Ride"-- all different, all special. In checking their tour schedule, I'm disappointed that Strawberry was the band's only venture west of Texas, as I would love to hear them again. We will wait patiently for the next CD. Thank you so much, Kym, Eamon, and Carol-- you're the best!

  • stocking stuffers
    author: Jeannie

I heard the Greencards open for Robert Earl Keen in Philadelphia and was hooked. I'm now giving the cd to family members and friends as stocking stuffers, and have the CD on repeat in my car!

truely an outstanding cd! every cut is one to enjoy

  • author: Marianne

Wow!!!!!! I'm not easy to impress but this group is something else. If your considering purchasing this cd, you won't be disappointed.

  • An outstanding example of the way acoustic music should be performed.
    author: Mike Maddox

The Greencards premier CD is just outstanding. The band did a great job selecting the material, most of which is original, as well as enlisting the help of several fantastic musicians - most notably Pat Flynn (of New Grass Revival fame) and Kenny Malone. I had the opportunity to hear Kym Warner and Carol Young perform in a house concert last summer and they told me they were in the process of making a CD with Eamon McLoughlin. I listen to a LOT of acoustic music and, believe me, this CD pretty much tops out the scale. I'd compare their vocal and instrumental musicianship with another group, if I could think of a fair comparison. The closest I can come is Nickel Creek, but The Greencards have all that virtuosity and a much different sound. "Movin' On" has something for everyone - hard-driving bluegrassy numbers, fiddle tunes, great vocals, an excellent cover of the Welch/Rawlings song "Caleb Meyer", the great John Duffey song "Victim to the Tomb", and more. Take my advice - buy it.

It seems as if there’s just no let up. The flow just keeps on flowing and the list keeps growing. Some truly outstanding new, young bands have burst on to the scene in recent times. Here, the latest to be getting tongues wagging, show why they’ve become a hot ticket act in and around the better bars and more discerning clubs of Austin, Texas…. and increasingly further afield. You’d either have to be cocky or confident to add a cover of Gillian Welch’s powerful Caleb Meyer to the studio set. The Greencards are anything but young punks, however and their take on the number is wonderfully mature and self-assured. The title track lopes along in rarely encountered country-funk mode, aided and abetted by little more than the odd earthy fiddle break or dry dobro creating a parched-out atmosphere. The Eamon McLoughlin-penned instrumental, Small Tots, features about the best guitar/mandolin pickin’ you’ll ever hear - and fiddling from the composer of the tune that’s as polished as the best of the old hands. Kym Warner (mandolin, bouzouki and vocals) is another dab hand at writing material which is also as solid as a rock. His flowing instrumental, Leonardo’s Ride, so sophisticated it bounces along with Renaissance-like flair, is both beautifully put together and played with a masters’ grace that brings Alison Brown to mind. The Far Side of The Hill, one of a trio of originals to be penned by all three in the band, is old-timey but as slick as a Brylcreamed quiff and helped on its merry way by another perfect performance. The album is shot through and through with clever surprises. It’s a listen-once-and-get-set-for-nothing-else-for-a-good-few-hours kind of deal. Much more than bluegrass, although that forms the broad backbone of the rich musical menu, these guys have learned their craft by sticking their noses into corners that have had a whiff of jug band, Cajun, back porch and western swing. No surprises then, to learn that they can Dawg it big time too, as in the jazzy but juicy You Pulled Me Out. John Duffy’s extraordinarily eerie Victim To The Tomb is handled with such respect that it possesses an Emmylou/Gram Parsons vocal quality. So, who are these fabulous Greencards and how did they come by the name? Well, two Aussies and a Londoner, actually (and that answers both questions). McLoughlin (the Brit) is a highly regarded songwriter-musical collaborator who has toured, played and recorded with the likes of Ray Wylie Hibbard, Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison and the Austin Lounge Lizards. Warner won four consecutive Australian National Bluegrass Championships before moving to Texas. Since arriving, he has toured and played with Rodney Crowell, Kasey Chambers, Kelly Willis and Trisha Yearwood. Carol Young is undisputedly “the voice” of the band and plays the kind of good-old-reliable bass that’s paced exactly right for the task of holding the show together. Best track? No dispute, it has to be Six White Horses. Those who are brave enough will find out why. It is worth buying MOVIN’ ON just to have this to brighten the day. If I was asked to nominate such a thing, this would be my Album of The Month/Quarter/Last Six Months. * NOTE (this is very important): CD only available at the band’s gigs or from the www.thegreencards.co, and www.cdbaby.com websites. Well, what are you waiting for???

  • Darn fine bluegrass
    author: Kyle Larson

This is one great bluegrass album! Our community radio station plays several of the songs regularly and gets requests for them whenever they're not playing. I sure wish The Greencards would tour in the Midwest.

  • veritable potpourri of bluegrass styles and sounds
    author: Zeb Lemke

This band is incredibly talented and they come together superbly to create a fantastic sound on this CD! The only way they could improve is by adding an extremely talented (asian) banjoist to their ensemble. But, they really are awesome!! I wish they would tour in my state!

  • Amazing
    author: Phil

Simply put, amazing!!! Supurb instrumental talent and vocals. What a great effort for their first CD. Can't wait for the next one and hopefully you can make your way back to NC and VA.

To me, the album seems to be an effective fusion of bluegrass, folk, celtic, and country. Well done. Good production and flow of material as it's layed out on the album. These guys (and gal) will be quickly movin on' to great places.

    author: Jason Prewitt

Acoustic heaven! I caught these guys in Austin and listened to this disc twice on my drive home and it just kept getting better. Finally had a look at the liner notes and realized they’re not just great players but damn fine songwriters too. I don’t know how two Australians and a Brit came to love the music they play so well but they’re the real deal!
