Album Notes

Lowly Violet (2009) is Kathy Greenholdt's fourth folk-rock album and was featured as one of the best new releases by women songwriters in Chicago on WXRT-FM's "Local Anesthetic." The album offers up eight original songs that explore the ageless mysteries of everyday existence, as seen through the eyes of a woman in the American Midwest. Arranged and produced by Liam Davis, Lowly Violet pairs Kathy's melodic, lyric-based writing with layers of guitar, upright bass, piano, organ, percussion, and pedal steel.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

In 2002, at the squarely-middle age of 38, Kathy picked up a guitar for the first time. That year she also wrote her first song and has since gone on to record four collections of original music.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS:

• Richard Milne of Chicago's WXRT-FM showcased Kathy's new album, Lowly Violet, as one of the best new releases by a local woman songwriter.

• Kathy's music was featured on BBC Radio 2 as the focus of a listener call-in contest hosted by deejay Steve Lamacq.

• One of Kathy's songs was chosen for the international songwriter compilation Females on Fire Vol. 3, produced by Gilli Moon and Warrior Girl Music in Los Angeles.

• In 2008, Kathy had her first song selected for a music library. She established her publishing company, Bindweed Music, in 2009.

SAMPLE PRESS and REVIEWS:

Regarding "Fire" from Lowly Violet: "Here's something I dug up in putting together this past Sunday's show on women in Chicago music and dug it so much I wanted to play it as a 'Capsule' this week."
-- Richard Milne, host of Local Anesthetic and Local Anesthetic Capsule, WXRT-FM, Chicago

Reviewing Lowly Violet: "Lyrically astute Americana folk from an intelligent middle-aged woman’s perspective; a welcome change to the suddenly male-dominated genre."
-- Smother Magazine

"['Summer's Through'] is just a gorgeously understated piece of songwriting.... [Wake-Up Prayer] has been in the pile of must-listen-to-them-again CDs for ages.... I ended up playing it five times in a row, so apologies to the nextdoor neighbor."
-- Steve Lamacq, BBC Radio 2
