Album Notes

Consisting entirely of his own original compositions, "Late August" is the debut recording of bassist Gregg August. The album reflects his wide musical experiences and influences: traditional jazz, afro-cuban, modern jazz, classical, and features an illustrious line up of players. Luminaries Ray Barretto and Frank Wess are joined by up and coming stars John Bailey (trumpet), Myron Walden (alto), Donny McCaslin (tenor), Alon Yavnai (piano), John Hart (guitar), Eric McPhearson (drums), Quincy Davis (drums) and Wilson -Chembo" Corniel (congas).

Gregg August has been professionally active in New York for the last ten years in several diverse musical circles. Originally a drummer, Gregg switched to bass in college and then went on to receive degrees from Juilliard and The Eastman School. Having played two seasons in Barcelona, Spain, as Principal bass with La Orchesta Ciutat de Barcelona, he returned to New York City, where he became active in both the jazz and latin scenes.

He has played with Ray Barretto, Ornette Coleman, Paquito D’Rivera and the Chico O’Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra, among others. He maintains his ties to classical music as Assistant Principal bass in the Brooklyn Philharmonic, as well as frequent collaborations as both composer and performer with the experimental group Bang on a Can.

Outstanding balance of multiple styles ... incredible musicianship

This CD brings together a great blend of jazz styles with latin overtones throughout. The compositions are deep and the performances inspired. I heard a track from the CD on the radio and immediately bought the CD and it along with Gregg August is one of my favorite new discoveries of the year.

The tittles of the pieces gives rise to the expectation of heavy, sad and dark sounding music, it is anything but. This music exudes a brilliance and lightness that transports you to a world of relaxation and Comfort and has the uncanny ability to convert non-jazz lovers into jazz appreciators,if not jazz lovers.
