Album Notes

Greg Hobbs is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter whose often sardonic outlook, and poetic yet down to earth lyrics, bring a fresh perspective to the folk-rock, roots-country genres.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Hobbs was brought up in a musical family, playing various instruments since the age of four. He has been composing and performing ever since.

He has played music for live theatre, studied classical saxophone, and released four independent solo CDs in Canada: Under Your Feet (1994), Confused and Bleeding (1999), Drake Motel (2001), and Threats & Promises (2004).

For the past four years Hobbs has been building a following while playing clubs and festivals all over Ontario, as well as bars in New York, San Francisco and Nashville.

In his current hometown he was named one of the "local must sees" by the Toronto Star. He has played with gigs with uber-troubadour Fred Eaglesmith, Victoria based country-diva Carolyn Mark, Blue Rodeo's Bob Egan, and True North artist Joel Kroeker

Hobbs' newest CD, Threats & Promises, has received excellent write-ups in Eye Magazine, The Toronto Star, Penguin Eggs and various web publications. According to CBC Radio One's Matthew Crosier: "If you like roots music... you can't miss this one."

This album is charming and it was a pleasure to find it just by an off chance. Folky and smooth, Hobbs' voice is clear and engaging. I will be looking into more of Hobbs' music because of this CD.

If you were always hoping for Paul Simon to release another solo album, this is just as satisfying, if not more so. With a familiar, soft and smoky haze settling over his singer/songwriter style, Greg Hobbs merges that classic 60's and 70's folk quality with a contemporary and current approach. These songs tend to lean towards the contemplative and introspective, going well with a beer in hand, a rainy winter evening or a quiet pause away from life's high frequency buzzing. This is one gem of an album.
