Joined by a superb and complimentary rhythm section of Lionel Loueke (guitar and voice), Aaron Parks (piano), Massimo Biolcati (bass), and Cafe (percussion), each musician beautifully allowing the nuances of her soft and sensual voice to shine. Features signature versions of "Skylark", "Flor de Lis", "Nonvignon" and "Chega de Saudade."
"The first thing you notice about Gretchen Parlato is that she's a singer with a deep, almost magical connection to the music," says jazz legend Herbie Hancock. "She takes a lot of chances with her understated style, and it works. Every note is expressive, powerful, and pretty. And most important, her heart is in the right place." Gretchen's petite bearing and vocal enchantments evoked another famed spell-casting pixie for one reviewer, who called Gretchen's 2003 performance with Herbie in Paris "a fairy-tale like show. . . in the universe of Bjork."
"I think in an inconspicuous way, Gretchen Parlato knows how to play the same instrument that Frank Sinatra played." comments jazz legend, Wayne Shorter. "Theres no one out there like Gretchen."
"Parlato's sense of subtle rhythmic interplay and understated theatrical nuance takes the ache of Frank and implicates it throughout an improvisational-based esthetic that rests, most often, on Brazilian master-class moments... As simple and restive as she sounds in print, her voice-scatting, cooing, leaning back then soaring-can leap through complex tempo and rhythmic shifts as if riding rapids."
-A.D. Amorosi, New York Press
"She enters the music, becoming part of the band, improvising in melody and rhythm, prying open sweet spots in the songs... it's evident that she's an extraordinary singer."
-Ben Ratliff, New York Times

"What a find"
author: James Surtees
I had long heard about this album but had a hard time finding it until a clerk at Amoeba Records, Hollywood told me to check out CD Baby. What a find! Both Gretchen and CD Baby. I have a large collection of Brazilian music and have been around long enough to have caught the introduction of Bossa Nova to the US. This young lady is already a superb artist with an unlimited future. I hear rumors of a forthcoming new album and await it with great anticipation - the best is yet to come from Ms. Parlato. Boa sorte!

By in large i usually listen to Jazz that is purely instrumental... However after hearing Gretchen on the Radio then hearing how Great her performance at the Brisbane Jazz Festival in 2008 was, I have now began to broaden my horizons into the Jazz vocal genre... Well done to Gretchen for creating such Beautiful, Soulful, music and well done to the other members of the group for intertwining their own abilities into and around Gretchen's vocal splendor... The world needs more music like this...

This is a great CD by an extraordinary singer accompanied by a top-notch band. I recently bought three copies to give to friends over the holidays. If you haven't heard this yet - please don't hesitate to buy this CD. She is amazingly sensitive, expressive, nuanced, versatile - and works so well with this band. I can't wait to hear the next CD - but this one will be a tough act to follow.
