Album Notes

While doubt and anxiety are common 21st century preoccupations, Gretel's songs evince an honesty and directness usually reserved for confessionals and bathroom stalls. Lyrics of disappointment, denial, love and faith shimmer with precision and intensity, while the melodic and tonal explorations of their music unabashedly suggest that something better might be possible.

The sound is eclectic, paying homage to everything from folk music to alt country to the blues. Whether through the existential pinch of a digital pulse, the ecstatic heights of an operatic line or the muddy optimism of a gospel choir, Gretel's palette is broad. Each song sits within its own well-deserved world, refreshingly interpreted and never underexposed.

This New England-based group, led by songwriter and mouthpiece Reva Williams, met in September 2003 and have just completed their debut record, Unreturnable Dirt, on Eyeteeth Records. Currently accepting dates for a neverending tour of the East Coast and Middle America, Gretel offers the strange comfort of unexpected and useless beauty.

unreturnable dirt

very nice to hear such honesty and sincerety in this artist, not much of that around in music today.revas voice is beautiful, and since all the songs are origional, you can hear the emotion behind the lyrics.i cant help but think of nora jones when i hear her songs, her singing is that strong and lingering in my mind. this is a great album to put on and drift away into. had a chance to pick up "meteorite", and it blew me away also, not to mention that the case is hand-made by the group[very nicely done, i love it], it also stays in my stereo rack, ready to play. can hardly wait for more from this group.revas voice compares to her beauty,[visit website ,you`ll see what i mean],but i`ve seen this group perform, melissa is also wicked cute. if you ever have a chance to see them in person it`s very enchanting.

I am more impressed each time I listen.

I am more impressed each time I listen. I usually will only like a couple of songs on an album, but there isn't one on this album I don't like. My daughter heard me listening to it and had to have it too! Don't stop here, keep making more.

Gretel today, and tomorrow, and forever

My boyfriend turned me on to this album. Freaking wow! I love it, I love them. I think it's what Jesus would listen to. When I'm having a really dark day now, I sit in the bathroom (chill, that's where my stereo is), with Gretel, and feel understood. And, a month ago, my boyfriend took me to their concert! They're at least as good live. And very, very good looking. I wouldn't be surprised, after they break big, to see companies using their gorgeous faces for endorsements. And I bet even the crappy products they're associated with will shoot off the charts. Like burning stars of fire.

Just what the nurse ordered

The great, great, Gretel. Lyrics of despair, and hope. The human experience set to music. Touched my emotional chords, and, somehow, left me feeling highly sexualized. "You are a Jedi", declares The Girl. Well, stroke my light saber. And try not to cut your hands. P.S. What an innovative album cover!
