Formed in the summer of 1994, and named for a graffiti-altered sign at a downtown bus station, Greyhound Soul immediately began recording songs that their lead singer and songwriter, Joe Pe-a, had written during his days as drummer for another band.
From early on in the recording process and at the live shows that followed, it was clear that Pe-a's coming out from behind the drums was the right move.
With his soulful, gruff voice, Pe-a delivers songs inspired by his early years growing up just outside Austin in Elgin, Texas.
The five-piece band includes Joey Pe-a on guitar and harmonica, Duane Hollis on bass, Winston Watson (Bob Dylan), Tommy Larkins (Jonathan Richman) on drums, Jason DeCorse on guitar, and Bobby Hepworth on keyboards.
March of 1996 marked the true emergence of this memorable band with both an appearance at SXSW and the release of their debut CD Freaks.
Between regular touring and recording the CD, Greyhound Soul has, in less that a year's time, earned significant recognition in multiple markets.
The band was featured in a series of radio ads for used clothing giant Buffalo Exchange.
"Alma de Galgo" Greyhound Soul's sophmore effort was releases in Febuary 2001 followed by a successful 25 date European tour.
Recent accolades include a 2000, 1999 &1998 Tucson Area Music Award (TAMMIES) for the "Best Rock and Roll Band" with additional 1998 TAMMIES awarded to Joey Pe-a for "Best Male Vocalist" and to Jason DeCorse for "Best Guitarist." Greyhound Soul also received a 1997 TAMMIE for the "Best Alternative Rock Band" and was voted "Best of Tucson" in the Tucson Weekly's Reader's Poll in September of 1996.
In the past few years, Greyhound Soul has been touring throughout the Southwest & Europe, from San Diego and Los Angeles to El Paso and Austin.
In Tucson, they have played with a wide variety of national acts, from the Goo Goo Dolls, Yo La Tango, and the Beat Farmers to JJ Cale, Jason Bonham, The Ian Moore Band, and Pete Anderson.
The band appears prominently on five recent compilation albums, including Best Buy's first-ever compilation CD Made in Arizona: Buzz of the Southwest.
"Joe Pe-a IS rock and roll.
Old school rock and roll, that is.
Skillfully alternating between soft melodic tones and unflinching intense vocals that command attention, Pe-a separates himself and his band from the hair jumping, tattooed love reaction Top 40 that permeates most of toady's music." --Planet Magazine "Pe-a's impassioned pop-rock vocals, infectious melodies, alternately pretty and aggressive guitars and energetic grooves add up to a potentially winning combination." --Arizona Daily Star "This record rocks with all the dynamics of a tornado ripping across the Texas panhandle." --Tucson Weekly "As a debut album, 'Freaks' shows Greyhound Soul realizing much of the potential at which until now it has only hinted." --Arizona Daily Star "The sound of the desert is at the center of Greyhound Soul" --Howe Gelb of Giant Sand
