“What Fools Do” by Cathy Grier is a 7 song Sampler containing 5 songs originally from her release entitled "Comin' Back To Me." A solo recording of vocal and guitar, ‘What Fools Do”, is a rootsy musical experience, it showcases a voice that ranges from sweet and haunting to edgy and lyrical. Accompanied by crafty guitar playing, this self-produced recording captures a raw personal style conveying Cathy’s intention for the feel of a live performance. Recorded at The Magic Shop in Soho, New York City in 2002 and engineered by studio veteran Danny Kopelson (Cassandra Wilson).
Cathy participates in New York City's MTA program, “Music Under New York." She has performed in Avery Fisher Hall and was featured on CNN, CBS Sunday Morning and NBC's Today Show. Cathy’s ‘street’ performances reveal a more energetic approach to her music that has attracted the eye of many indie-documentary filmmakers. Her performances are heartfelt, showcasing her captivating guitar style and rich powerful voice. As a songwriter who is sometimes political, sometimes analytical, she echoes Dylan and Mitchell with a touch of Bonnie Raitt on the side.
Currently dividing her time between New York City and Columbia County, NY, Cathy Grier is involved in handling every aspect of her career. She records on her own label SideHill Music.
Cathy formed her first independent record label in 1980 with partner Lenore Troia. The 8 year association was highlighted by an MTV basement tape win in 1986 and numerous recordings. After venturing out on her own, Cathy lived in Key West recording and performing and opening up for major artists like Laura Nyro. She returned to New York city to record “New York Sessions", a self produced album in 1990 and then spent six years in Paris and London writing and performing for many artists, including World Music guitarist Pierre Bensusan, Carrere artist Indra, Sony Music artist Anggun and Maryanna Matisse, who’s songs have been featured on United Airlines pop 40 channel. She recorded CD "Retracing" in Key West with a full band in 1998.
London's “Time Out” magazine described her as, “Funkily melodic in a mature and assured style.”
Cathy Grier believes music is a powerful tool that crosses boundaries of ignorance and hate.
Cathy’s two other recordings also available: “Retracing” and “Comin’ Back To Me”.
