Mr. Sputnik

Nice Job
Seven Shooter is a new EP by the DC-based duo known as Gringo (James and Michael). Having known of James from his time fronting popular DC power-pop band Confidence Man, I was eager to check out his newest project. Gringo doesn't disappoint.

Seven Shooter is more than the simple folk that you would expect from a guitar-wielding duo. The sound is as lush as the lyrics are complex, and the EP is well recorded and mixed. In "Down Man Good," James uses turns on common phrases to tell the story of heartache and abuse, while Michael offers just the right melodic counterpoint on dobro. Another great example of the duo in action is "Midsummer Night," where effervescent chord changes are layered with swirling acoustic and electric guitars. These melodic changes propel the lyrics forward, rather than drowning the lyrics.

Excellent job.

Seven Shooter is the new EP by Washington DC-based duo Gringo. Having known of James from his time fronting popular DC power-pop band Confidence Man, I was eager to check out his newest project. Gringo does not disappoint.

Seven Shooter starts out with the uptempo tune "El Toro Es Tranquilo." The Latin-flavored guitars and mix of Spanish and English lyrics set the mood nicely. Gringo really hits their stride as a duo on the second tune, "Midsummer Night." The swirling chord changes give the song an almost dirge-like quality, while the lyrics are propelled and accentuated by the tasteful and twangy electric guitar. By the fourth song, the country-tinged "Down Man Good," Gringo is in full form. James uses turns on common phrases to tell a story of heartbreak and abuse, while Michael offers the perfect melodic counterpoint on dobro.

Overall, this EP is a great start for this DC duo. Seven Shooter is well recorded and offers a great balance of acoustic and electric guitars. Nice job!
