---------------

Flesh Tunes is the debut release from gristlestick, one of the most unique bands to emerge from the Northeast in years. Forged in the small college town of Farmington, Maine, the band honed their skills with 4 to 5 nights of practice each week and weekly open-mic performances. In late 2005, gristlestick's high energy performances and infectious hooks and grooves emerged as favorites in several Maine venues.

In November 2005, the band was approached by fellow performer and entrepreneur Jason "Sween" Mancine, who offered them the inaugural record deal on his new micro-indie label, The Sween Machine. Flesh Tunes was released to a packed house at The Granary Brew Pub in Farmington, Maine on May 11, 2006 in anticipation of the June to September continental tour that included 40 stops from Montana to Alaska and back.

Flesh Tunes is marked by energetic and well-conceived compositions, witty and intelligent lyrics, and blunt deliveries that push the boundaries of rock, funk, and folk music as we know it. Nothing is held back on the album, nor does the band hold back in their crowd-pleasing live performances. With songs like “Coke Anthem”, a tongue-in-cheek ode to the ups and downs of cocaine use and abuse, to the sarcastic “Toolbags” that extols the virtues (or lack thereof) of rock musicians, to the upbeat ukulele-driven bluegrass tune, “Train to the Other Side” -- Flesh Tunes is a cross section of the creativity and versatility that define this band.

From the high plains to the Arctic Circle, gristlestick's Summer 2006 tour created a buzz and a healthy dose of controversy as it openly and frankly addressed the themes of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll in a bold style that has rarely, if ever, been heard before.

these guys just plain rock the house
author: darcy
this is quite possibly the most unique album i've experienced. and i do mean experience because from the first song to the last they(tom, leif, russ, and jim) completely hit all the genre's of the music scene.this is my new fave cd in my very diverse and sizable collection. i especially like coke anthem and backdoor. i have had the dubious honour of seeing these boys play in the bars as well as in my back yard in whitehorse and its hard to differentiate what sounds better, the cd or the live shows because they can pound it out with such ferocity in both arenas (studio & live ) this cd is a must in everyones collection. i even went as far as sending a copy to my mother in ontario who is a grandmother 7 times over and she loves it.... the guys were nice enough to sign it for her too.i love this cd and i love those guys... they are on their way to a long and successful career as innovative and groundbreaking musicians... CHEERS G-TEAM Yukon Brewing Co. loves ya'll

What I like most of the gristlestick CD.
author: Susan Stevens
I like the music of this CD much more than the lyrics, but I'm over 40 (alright, close to 50!). The talent of these musicians can not be overlooked, even if you don't like what they sing. The range of musical style is vast and precise. I am in awe of the dedication and knowledge of these fine young men. It amazes me how songs come together and they make it appear so easy! This is a CD I have shared with young and old alike and everyone agrees that the talent is there for people who love music to listen to. Rawk on boys!

author: Amy Clary
Gristlestick's Flesh Tunes is a refreshing antidote to the mainstream, sanitized pop music too often heard on today's airwaves. No doubt about it, Gristlestick boasts some masterful musicians: from Tom Stevens's inspired guitar and lap steel to Leif Devine's adept and infectious bass, their talent makes them a force to be reckoned with. But that's only the beginning of their appeal. What sets Gristlestick apart from the ersatz angst-rockers too often heard on commercial radio is their quest to reflect life as authentically experienced by many struggling to live and create in 21st- century America. From the infinitely danceable "Coke Anthem" to the surprisingly poignant "Might Die Alone," Flesh Tunes consistantly delivers high-energy, nuanced songs that would surely receive constant radio airplay...if only the corporate Clear Channel-ized stations were worthy of them. Rock on, Gristelstick!

So diverse it's unclassifiable

With Flesh Tunes you get your moneys worth. Each song has well thought out lyrics, unique vocals and a few solos that you won't mind rewinding and hearing again. I couldn't settle on any one genre. With so much Bluesy, Folk, Funk, Psychedelic, Twangy country I doubt you can either. Buy Flesh Tunes and see what I mean.
